Casa Kimberly
Casa Kimberly is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most romantic and historically significant properties, created from the former homes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during their legendary 1960s love affair. The story begins in 1962 when Burton arrived in Puerto Vallarta to film “The Night of the Iguana” alongside Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr, with Elizabeth Taylor accompanying him despite both being married to other people at the time.
Originally staying at Hotel Oceano on the Malecón, the couple moved to director John Huston’s casa after Elizabeth had an encounter with a flying cockroach and threatened to leave Puerto Vallarta entirely. For Elizabeth’s 32nd birthday in 1964, Burton purchased Casa Kimberley for £37,000 as a gift, while acquiring the house across the street for himself. Burton then commissioned the famous pink bridge connecting the two properties, known alternately as the “Lovers’ Bridge,” “Reconciliation Bridge,” or “Puente del Amor,” inspired by Venice’s Bridge of Sighs.
Taylor sold the property during the 1990s, and it was eventually acquired by hotelier Janice Chatterton, who also owns the nearby Hacienda San Angel hotel in another of Burton’s former Puerto Vallarta properties. All suites and public spaces feature 19th-century antiques, from Italian paintings and horse carriages to a marble statue carved by French sculptor Gustave Deloye. The famous lozenge-shaped pool that both stars enjoyed has been restored to its original glory, along with Elizabeth’s pink marble heart-shaped bathtub.
