Walk Donegal's great Atlantic beach with a local guide at the quiet ends of the day, from marram dunes to rock pools and waves.
The Big Strand

Donegal’s beaches have long sustained the people around them through fishing, kelp gathering and small farms along the dunes. Trá Mór means “Big Strand” in Irish, a name that speaks to both its size and its importance. This stretch of coast was once remote, with the sea shaping trade and everyday life, and nearby Dunfanaghy grew up as a market and fishing village whose bond with the water still shows in its boat sheds, coastal paths and seafood.
The beach sits in a rich ecological zone too. The dunes shelter the farmland behind them, while the band between the tides is home to shellfish, seaweed and birds.
Better with a Guide, and Good Timing

Trá Mór is vast, but how it feels depends on when and how you go. Privately or in a small group, you arrive at quieter times, usually morning or late afternoon, when the light is gentler and the shore emptier. A guide takes you beyond the obvious access points to stretches most visitors never reach, and the pace follows you, with time for photos, conversation, a cold-water swim or simply watching. It becomes a proper coastal experience rather than a stop at the beach, easy for a couple, friends or a solo walker.
No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

You set off by the dunes, where marram grass pins the sand against the Atlantic wind, and your guide explains how these systems protect the land inland. Nearer the sea the sand firms up underfoot and shallow tidal pools mirror the sky.
Seabirds gather along the water’s edge: oystercatchers probing for shellfish, gulls riding the wind and, on calm days, sometimes dolphins offshore.
Quiet Corners and a Bracing Swim
The Atlantic here is lively but clear, and if you’re game, a short swim introduces you to Donegal’s invigorating water. At each end of the strand, rocky outcrops make sheltered corners where waves break softly and seaweed gathers in ribbons. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can fold the walk into a trip along Ireland’s northwest coast, with a welcoming place to stay.
