This is winter in the Swedish far north, where daylight lasts only a few hours and the dark stretches long enough to make the aurora the main event.

The week opens in Stockholm, with its museums, design shops and Michelin tables, then flies you north into Lapland, well above the Arctic Circle, to Kiruna and Abisko.

Abisko is one of the most reliable places on earth to see the Northern Lights. A gap in the mountains keeps its skies clear when the rest of the region clouds over, and a chairlift carries you to a viewing station above the tree line.

From there you sleep a night in the Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi, in a room carved fresh from the river each winter, then spend a day on a snowmobile across frozen lakes and birch forest, with a Sami lunch and a sauna to thaw out after.

This is a working landscape as much as a wild one. The Sami have herded reindeer across these fells for thousands of years, and their food, craft and culture still shape the region.

The far north is remote, but it is a long way from empty.

This is an adventure, but a well-cushioned one. Short flights, some of the best lodges in the north, every guide and transfer handled for you.

In detail

Day 1: Arrival in Stockholm

A private car meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Spend the afternoon on foot in Gamla Stan, the old town, where ochre and oxblood facades crowd lanes that have barely changed in five hundred years. Look in at the Royal Palace, stop for coffee and a cinnamon bun, and let the day settle.

Dinner is at one of the city’s Michelin tables: gravlax, perhaps, or a refined take on Swedish meatballs.

Day 2: Stockholm - Art, Culture & Culinary Delights

A full day in the capital with a private guide. Start at the Vasa Museum, built around a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised almost intact three centuries later, then on to Fotografiska for photography by the water. Lunch is Nordic and seasonal.

The afternoon is yours: the design shops and cafés of Södermalm, or the ABBA Museum if the mood is lighter. Dinner is at the edge of Lake Mälaren, where the city glows against the early winter dark.

Day 2: Stockholm - Art, Culture & Culinary Delights

Day 3: Stockholm to Kiruna - Heading North to the Arctic

Fly north to Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost town, set roughly 150 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. The shift is total: from a capital of glass and water to a frontier of snow, iron mining and reindeer herding. A transfer takes you to a lodge looking out over white wilderness. Dinner leans on what the north provides, reindeer, cloudberries, lingonberry. With luck and a clear sky, the first green flickers of aurora arrive after dark.

Day 4: Abisko National Park - Northern Lights & Arctic Wilderness

Drive west to Abisko, on the shore of Lake Torneträsk. The town owes its reputation to a quirk of weather: the mountains to the west strip the rain out of incoming Atlantic systems, leaving a pocket of clear sky here even when everywhere around it is clouded over.

That makes it one of the most dependable places on earth to catch the aurora. By day, snowshoe through birch forest and out onto the frozen lake with a private guide. After dark, a chairlift climbs to the Aurora Sky Station above the tree line, far from any other light, where you settle in with a hot drink and watch the sky light up.

Day 5: Ice Hotel Experience - A Night in a Frozen Wonderland

Move on to Jukkasjärvi and the original Icehotel, rebuilt every winter from ice cut out of the Torne River and melted back into it each spring. Artists are invited to carve the suites, so no two rooms, and no two years, are alike.

Tour the sculpted halls, take a drink served in a glass made of ice at the icebar, then bed down for the night in a cold-rated sleeping bag on a mattress laid over a block of ice. It is colder and more comfortable than it sounds.

Day 6: Snowmobile Safari - Exploring Sweden’s Arctic Wilderness

The day is built around a snowmobile safari into the country around Jukkasjärvi. With a guide leading, you cross frozen lakes and thread through birch forest before climbing for a long view over the fells. Lunch is with a Sami host in a lavvu, the food cooked over an open fire. Back at base, a sauna is waiting, the Nordic answer to a day spent at minus twenty: heat yourself through, step out into the cold, and feel every nerve wake up.

Day 7: Return to Stockholm - Farewell to the Arctic

Fly back to Stockholm and check in for a final night. Spend the afternoon on what you skipped at the start, then have one last good dinner in the city before the flight home.

Day 8: Departure

A private transfer takes you to the airport for your flight home.
