At a glance
This is winter in the Swedish far north, where daylight lasts only a few hours and the dark stretches long enough to make the aurora the main event.
The week opens in Stockholm, with its museums, design shops and Michelin tables, then flies you north into Lapland, well above the Arctic Circle, to Kiruna and Abisko.
Abisko is one of the most reliable places on earth to see the Northern Lights. A gap in the mountains keeps its skies clear when the rest of the region clouds over, and a chairlift carries you to a viewing station above the tree line.
From there you sleep a night in the Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi, in a room carved fresh from the river each winter, then spend a day on a snowmobile across frozen lakes and birch forest, with a Sami lunch and a sauna to thaw out after.
This is a working landscape as much as a wild one. The Sami have herded reindeer across these fells for thousands of years, and their food, craft and culture still shape the region.
The far north is remote, but it is a long way from empty.
This is an adventure, but a well-cushioned one. Short flights, some of the best lodges in the north, every guide and transfer handled for you.
