The Cotswolds are England at its most romantic. Honey-colored villages sit among rolling farmland, old coaching inns have become destination restaurants, and some of the country’s loveliest manor houses are now exceptional hotels.

For luxury travelers, this is a particularly easy place to slow down. Stay on a private estate or in a grand country house, and spend an afternoon walking between villages.

More about The Cotswolds

Burford, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water are among the best-known places, although we’d also encourage you to explore beyond the villages that fill up with day visitors. With a private driver and guide, you can discover smaller communities, stop at country pubs and visit estates that are harder to reach if you’re relying on public transportation.

The region is particularly good for hotels. The best properties make the countryside part of the experience, whether you’re waking up in a historic manor, having dinner sourced from the surrounding estate or unwinding in a spa for the afternoon.

For gay couples, the Cotswolds work beautifully for an anniversary, honeymoon or romantic break. There isn’t a significant gay nightlife scene, nor does there need to be.

We focus instead on hotels and experiences where LGBTQ+ travelers can relax and feel completely comfortable.

The Cotswolds also fit naturally into a longer journey through England. They’re around two hours from London by road, depending on where you’re staying, making them an easy contrast to several days in the capital. Oxford, Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon can also be incorporated into a wider itinerary.

Planning a Trip to the Cotswolds

General information

The Cotswolds cover a broad swathe of countryside across south-central England, rather than a single town or village. Much of the landscape is protected as a National Landscape, recognized for its rolling hills, farmland and villages built from the distinctive golden limestone associated with the region.

There is no single center. Burford, Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold are among the best-known towns and villages, while smaller places such as Upper and Lower Slaughter provide the more rural Cotswolds people often imagine before they arrive.

The northern and southern Cotswolds also have slightly different characters, so where you stay matters. Rather than trying to cover the entire region, we’d usually choose an excellent hotel and explore from there with a private driver.

The Cotswolds are beautiful throughout the year. Summer brings gardens and long evenings, while fall and winter suit the country-house hotels particularly well. Weekends and peak summer days can be busy in the most famous villages, making good planning worthwhile.

The Cotswolds LGBTQ+ rights

The Cotswolds Villages

The famous Cotswolds villages deserve their reputation, but trying to see as many as possible in a day rather misses the point.

Broadway is one of the grander villages, with its broad high street lined by limestone buildings and Broadway Tower standing above the surrounding countryside. Burford is built along a steep historic high street leading towards the River Windrush, while Stow-on-the-Wold grew around an old market square and makes a good stopping point in the northern Cotswolds.

Then there are the smaller villages. Upper and Lower Slaughter sit along the River Eye and offer a quieter picture of the Cotswolds, particularly once the busiest part of the day has passed.

With a private driver, you don’t need to follow a fixed sightseeing circuit. Visit one of the famous villages early, disappear down country lanes to somewhere smaller, stop for lunch at a good pub and allow the day to develop at a suitably Cotswolds pace.

The Great English Country House

The country house is central to the Cotswolds experience. Great estates have shaped this landscape for centuries, and today you can experience them as historic houses, gardens and some of England’s most atmospheric luxury hotels.

Sudeley Castle has more than a thousand years of history and particularly strong royal connections. Katherine Parr, the final wife of Henry VIII, lived here and is buried in the castle’s chapel.

For gardens, Hidcote is one of the great names of the Arts and Crafts movement. Its series of outdoor “rooms” became enormously influential in English garden design.

On the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace takes the country-house idea to an altogether grander scale. The UNESCO-listed palace was the birthplace of Winston Churchill and remains home to the Dukes of Marlborough.

You can also sleep within this tradition. Several former manor houses and private estates now rank among the Cotswolds’ finest hotels, allowing the country-house experience to continue long after the day’s sightseeing is over.

Getting to the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds are an easy addition to a stay in London, with the journey taking roughly two hours by road depending on where you’re staying and traffic. For a luxury trip, a private transfer is often the simplest option, taking you directly from your London hotel to your Cotswolds property.

Rail is also possible. Direct trains from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh provide one of the most useful routes into the northern Cotswolds.

Other stations around the region can work depending on your itinerary.
Once you arrive, however, a car becomes much more useful. The villages, estates and country hotels are spread across a large rural area, and some of the most rewarding places aren’t conveniently connected by public transportation.

We can arrange a private driver for touring, which also gives you the freedom to stop for lunch, change plans or spend longer somewhere you particularly like rather than planning the day around bus schedules.
