Three Maldives resorts built for stargazing
The Maldives has some of the clearest night skies in the world. With almost no artificial light across its atolls, three resorts have built distinct ways to see it, from a dedicated overwater observatory to a rotating astronomy program to villa telescopes arranged on request. Here’s what holds up against a look at each resort’s own stargazing offer.
Unlike land-based stargazing spots, these resorts let you watch the sky from directly above the water, with nothing but ocean between you and the horizon in every direction. That openness, combined with the total absence of skyglow from nearby towns or roads, is part of what makes the region increasingly popular with travelers planning a trip specifically around the night sky rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Most Maldives resorts occupy a single private island, with the nearest inhabited neighbor often a boat ride away. That isolation means there’s no ambient light from a neighboring property to compete with, something dark-sky destinations elsewhere often can’t guarantee even with genuinely low light pollution overall.
Anantara Kihavah
In 2017, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas opened SKY, the Maldives’ first and only overwater observatory, on Baa Atoll at the edge of Hanifaru Bay. The observatory sits inside an ash-dome structure on the roof deck of the SKY Bar.
The telescope is a research-grade 16-inch Meade LX200, mounted on a tripod with a 360-degree remote control. A resident astronomy expert talks visitors through the constellations overhead, so no prior astronomy knowledge is needed. Same-sex couples can book the observatory privately for the evening rather than sharing the space with other visitors. It’s a fitting setting for a Maldives stargazing honeymoon, with the observatory doubling as a cocktail bar after dark.

Soneva Fushi
Soneva Fushi runs a rotating astronomy program through its events calendar, bringing in visiting astronomers and science communicators throughout the year to lead sessions on the night sky. The program sits alongside the resort’s wider “Soneva Stars” offering, which centers stargazing as one of its signature island experiences.
Rather than a single fixed installation, the program changes with whoever’s in residence, so each visit can offer a different angle on the Maldives’ night sky. It’s a setting that works equally well for a quiet night alone, as a couple, or a small group booking the observatory together.

V Villas Maldives at Mirihi
At V Villas Maldives at Mirihi, in South Ari Atoll, stargazing is arranged directly through the resort’s Guest Relations Team using the resort’s own telescope. It’s a simpler setup than an observatory, but a direct one. Book a session and someone will bring the telescope to you. It’s a low-key option for a couple who’d rather arrange something spontaneous than plan a big observatory visit in advance.

No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

The Maldives sits close to the equator, which means both northern and southern hemisphere constellations are visible from the same spot, something you don’t get at most latitudes. The atolls are also flat, low-lying, and largely free of the urban development that causes light pollution elsewhere, so the horizon stays dark in every direction.

Best Time of Year to Stargaze
The dry season, roughly November through April, brings lower humidity and less cloud cover, giving the clearest views of the year. The wetter months between May and October can still offer clear nights, but cloud cover is far less predictable, so anyone planning a trip specifically around stargazing should lean toward the dry season.
What You Can Actually See
Away from any artificial light, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night, along with far more stars than most travelers will have seen before. A telescope adds detail on top of that, distant planets, star clusters, and, depending on the model, deep-sky objects like nebulae or galaxies that aren’t visible without one.
A Maldives stargazing trip is also a popular choice for LGBTQ+ honeymoons and anniversaries. Every resort listed here has been chosen by Out Of Office not just for its stargazing offer, but because it’s a place where a same-sex couple can book a stay without needing to think twice about it.
Whichever resort you choose, seeing the Maldives’ night sky away from any city light is worth building a night or two into your itinerary.
