Is Bulgaria LGBTQ+ friendly?
In Bulgaria, same-sex relationships are legal, discrimination against LGBTQ+ people is prohibited and workplace protections cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Equaldex gives Bulgaria an Equality Index of 44 out of 100.
Source: Equaldex, checked October 22, 2026.
Bulgaria is one of the more conservative countries in the European Union on LGBTQ+ issues. Same-sex relationships are legal, but couples cannot marry or register a partnership, and a 2024 law restricted discussion of LGBTQ+ topics in schools.
That said, Sofia has a small, friendly scene and a Pride each June that has grown steadily, and visitors to the capital, the Black Sea coast and the wine regions rarely encounter problems. Public affection between same-sex couples is still unusual, so most couples keep it low-key outside their hotel.
We choose hotels and guides in Bulgaria that welcome same-sex couples, and can combine the country with more relaxed neighbors such as Greece.
