The best things to do in Glasgow

The Scottish city is booming and has plenty to keep you active

When venturing to bonnie Scotland you'd be forgiven for looking no further than Edinburgh or for the Loch Ness monster.

But the city of Glasgow has a lot to offer and certainly punches above its weight when it comes to being a must-visit destination. With its own international airport (and it's own tube!), we recently spent a weekend in the city exploring to give you our best tips.

The West End is at the heart of Glasgow and the area with most going on. If you have just a day in the city, we'd recommend taking in the area. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Park is the city's main museum and art gallery. Offering an eclectic selection of history, its highlight is the Dali painting “Christ of Saint John of the Cross”.

Dakota Deluxe Glasgow

The Botanic Gardens are also a must visit as well as the quaint walks by the river nearby. Ashton Lane is fun for drinks whilst Paper Cup is good for breakfast and brunch. Try Lunch at the Bothy and then dinner at The Butchershop for steak or Ox and Finch.

When it comes to sleeping, the Dakota Deluxe Glasgow is really something special. Centrally located, it's a new and stylish hotel. The rooms are beautifully appointed and offer excellent facilities. Monsoon showers, sumptuous pillows and a media hub which allows you to stream music from your phone or connect your laptop to the big screen.

There's a chocolate turndown service each evening and the beds amongst some of the comfiest I've had the pleasure of sleeping in. The bathrooms come complete with spacious showers, large baths and extensive vanity units.

It also has a fantastic Bar and Grill. We tried both the lobster and the Chateaubriand – both stunning and the desserts are to die for. Make sure you pair it with one of their signature dessert wines. A comfortable setting and with staff who are highly attentive, a Michelin star can't be far off.

Enjoy an after dinner cocktail at the lobby bar – I highly recommend the rhubarb and vanilla gin – before retiring to your beautiful room.

If you're looking for a gay bar in Glasgow then you should try a visit to the renowned Polo Lounge or the Katy's Bar. Make sure you take advantage of Dakota's free airport transfers as well!
