As the founder and CEO of Out Of Office, travel is not just my profession but my passion. However, as a gay man, traveling to a country where homosexuality is not legally recognized brings unique challenges and a nuanced reality.

Navigating the Journey: From Airports to Atolls

Traveling as an LGBTQ+ couple in the Maldives requires careful navigation. Even at the airport, my partner and I often go through immigration separately. While it’s not a legal requirement, it makes the process simpler and avoids unnecessary questions. This is just one of the many small decisions we make to ensure smooth and stress-free travel. In 2025, the Maldives launched a new international terminal which is much more in keeping with other major cities. Trust me when I say that you feel a lot more comfortable and familiar going through this airport than you did at the old one which was essentially just a hut!

But from the moment you board a seaplane to your Maldives resort, the magic of the country takes over. Soaring above endless blue waters, dotted with pristine island atolls, is an unforgettable experience. Even though I’ve been to the Maldives numerous times, I still find myself in awe and pinching myself every single time. Looking down from the seaplane feels like stepping into another world—a world where the beauty of nature is almost surreal. It’s one of life’s greatest highlights and a moment that never fails to take my breath away.

The Joy of Disconnecting: Setting your Out Of Office

There’s something transformative about being on a remote island. As a CEO, switching off is nearly impossible—your business is always on your mind. Yet, the Maldives is the one place where I come closest to achieving true relaxation. Afternoons are often spent lounging on a sunbed by a private pool, indulging in the luxury of an impromptu nap, the sound of gentle waves in the background. It’s a feeling that’s unparalleled—a rare opportunity to pause and savor the simplicity of doing absolutely nothing.

Some days, I even leave my phone behind in the villa, allowing myself to disconnect from the constant hum of emails and notifications. The ability to unplug, even for a few hours, is one of the greatest luxuries of our modern age. And setting your Out Of Office email? That’s a joy in itself—a declaration that for a few precious days, you are fully present in your own life. It’s a ritual I cherish and encourage everyone to embrace at least a few times a year.

The Reality of LGBTQ+ Travel in the Maldives

Despite its idyllic beauty, the Maldives is not officially welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. The laws are clear, and caution is always necessary. Yet, I’ve found that the reality on the ground is often more welcoming than the official stance might suggest. Resorts like The Nautilus, Soneva Jani, and Joali Being go out of their way to create safe, inclusive spaces. Their focus on guest privacy and world-class hospitality ensures a welcoming environment for all travelers, regardless of sexual orientation.

That said, it’s important to acknowledge that my position as a travel industry professional provides a layer of privilege. This awareness drives Out Of Office’s commitment to ensuring every client feels safe and supported, with travel plans tailored to their comfort level. For some, the Maldives might not feel like the right choice, and that’s okay. There are equally stunning alternatives like French Polynesia (including Bora Bora), or the Seychelles, where the cultural climate is more openly inclusive.
