A Private Water Blessing at a Countryside Pagoda Near Siem Reap

A centuries-old Cambodian ritual of chanting and blessed water, received quietly at a rural pagoda away from the temple crowds.

An Ancient Tradition

The water blessing is one of Cambodia’s oldest rituals, thought to have roots in earlier Hindu purification rites and still performed today at Buddhist pagodas across the country. At a peaceful countryside pagoda near Siem Reap, monks recite chants in Pali, the classical language of the Buddhist texts, and bless the water that is then sprinkled or poured over each person taking part.

Away From the Temple Routes

The pagoda sits in quiet grounds south of the city, far from the main temple circuit. Saffron-robed monks sit beside bowls and vessels of water prepared for the ritual. Around Siem Reap, Wat Arang and Wat Bo are two of the pagodas best known for it, each with the same calm, unhurried feel.

Two Ways to Be Blessed

There are two forms. The gentler is a sprinkling of water with chanting that wishes you good fortune, safe travels and a long life. The fuller version sees blessed water poured over your head as the monks keep chanting, with a sarong provided beforehand so your own clothes stay dry. To close the ceremony, a monk knots a red cord around your wrist as a sign it’s done.

At the Ritual’s Own Pace

Because it’s private, there’s no queue of visitors behind you, so the ritual unfolds as it would for local people visiting for their own blessing. Modest dress is expected, and shoes come off before you enter the sacred space.

Each traveler receives the blessing in turn, so it’s as meaningful traveling solo as with a partner or friends. Your Out Of Office specialist arranges it respectfully, and our Cambodia guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and practical advice.
