For LGBTQ+ couples traveling in Japan, an additional layer of care is needed: knowing which neighborhoods feel most welcoming, which hotels treat same-sex couples with real warmth, and how norms around public affection shift from city to city.
Shinjuku’s Ni-chome district in Tokyo boasts one of the highest concentrations of gay bars anywhere in the world, yet the etiquette inside those bars, and outside them, differs enough from home that it is worth knowing before arrival.
Traditional public baths add another layer entirely: most onsen remain segregated by sex rather than by couple, and a private kashikiri bath, booked in advance, is usually the better route for a honeymoon than a communal one. That local knowledge matters more in Japan than in most honeymoon destinations, since the difference between a good hotel and the right hotel rarely shows up in a review.
