In Tanzania, LGBTQ+ rights are severely restricted, with both the legal and social environment being hostile toward LGBTQ+ individuals. Homosexual acts are illegal, and laws are strictly enforced, often resulting in significant prison sentences. There is no legal protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and same-sex unions are not recognized in any form.
Public attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people are generally negative, largely influenced by conservative cultural and religious beliefs. Advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights is met with considerable resistance, and LGBTQ+ organizations and events often face government crackdowns. This creates a challenging environment for LGBTQ+ individuals, both locally and for those visiting the country.
If you plan to visit Tanzania, it’s important to be aware of the legal risks and societal attitudes you may encounter. While we cannot change the laws, we can assist in navigating the challenges you might face during your trip, ensuring that your experience is as safe and informed as possible.
Accommodation
Wild Waters Lodge
One of the highlights of Lemala is the Wild Waters Lodge. Located mid-stream on the Nile on a private island surrounded by rainforest, the setting is pretty spectacular. There are ten thatched roof, timber-floor rooms, all of which overlook the Nile and the rapids. You’ll have a private deck and free-standing baths carved from local pink granite. You’ll wake up each morning to the thunder of the River Nile and see rare, colourful species of birds. Elevated wooden walkways link the rooms to the restaurant and bar. Arriving at the Wild Waters Lodge by canoe or helicopter is an experience you’ll never forget.

Mpingo Ridge Lodge
Located on an escarpment overlooking the Tarangire River and valley, Mpingo Ridge Lodge is another Lemala highlights. It’s in Tarangire, the sixth largest part in Tanzania, a rich African savannah surrounded by rivers, woodlands and especially notable for its herds of elephants and vast baobab trees. It’s very close to the park’s gate so you won’t be too deep in the wilderness. It’s a good place to experience your first safari.
All fifteen tented suites have excellent Tarangire views and benefit from cool breezes during the hotter months. The main lodge has a bar, spa, pool and restaurant. You can enjoy sundowners, morning walks and game drives.

Lemala Nanyukie
Opened in October 2018, the Lemala Nanyukie properties are a great addition to Lemala’s luxury collection. Located in the Serengeti National Park in Eastern Serengeti, this is the heart of Africa. The Serengeti spans around 30,000 km². Lemala Nanyukie is located in the park’s central region, 45-minutes from the Seronera Airstrip. The properties are ranged along a verdant savanna and shaded by acacia trees.
Each property has high tented ceilings, private decks and lightly accented decor. There’s a pool, lounge, bar and outdoor viewing area in the main area. Private meals such as lanter-lit dinners and bush breakfasts can be arranged. In the evening, you can gather around the campfire and share stories of the African bush.

- Oversized bed, spacious lounge and bathroom
- Private wooden deck and plunge pool overlooking the Serengeti
