When the sun goes down, one of Australia's most intact wild places comes alive, and a naturalist shows you where to look.

An Island That Kept Its Wildlife

Kangaroo Island has never had foxes or rabbits, the two introduced species that devastated small mammals across much of mainland Australia, and it has far fewer feral cats. The result is one of the country’s most intact temperate ecosystems, where native animals move with unusual confidence once night falls. Around a third of the island sits within Flinders Chase National Park and other protected reserves, alongside privately managed conservation land on the south coast.

Between dusk and midnight the island is at its liveliest. Brush-tailed possums, owlet nightjars and little penguins take over from the daytime species, and tammar wallabies, southern brown bandicoots and short-beaked echidnas turn up in numbers rarely seen elsewhere.

Led by Someone Who Knows the Night

Your guide isn’t running a set route. Naturalists here usually come from ecology, conservation or field research, and they read the landscape as they go: seasonal movements, habitat conditions, where an animal is likely to be tonight. With a small group there’s no rush to move on, time for every question, and the freedom to change direction when something stirs.

Small and quiet also matters to the animals. The less disturbance you cause, the more natural the behavior you see.

Night-Vision in Your Own Hands

Instead of torches that would scatter wildlife, you’re handed night-vision monoculars and thermal devices to scan the scrub and open ground yourself. It changes the evening, especially for children: rather than waiting to be shown, they find the animals on their own.

Tammar wallabies, one of the island’s big conservation success stories, are reliably out in the coastal scrub. Echidnas, slow and solitary, are easy to watch up close without bothering them, and wild kangaroos graze the open ground from dusk. Nothing is staged; what you see depends on the night and on your guide.

A Lesson You Can See

Your naturalist turns each sighting into a story: why the absence of predators lets these species thrive, how protected land shapes what survives, and what an animal’s presence says about the health of its habitat. There’s no mobile signal across much of the interior and the south coast, so the evening becomes something shared. A bandicoot slipping through the scrub, or a little penguin coming ashore, asks everyone to be still and look in the same direction at once.

When to Go, and How It Comes Together

Nocturnal wildlife is most active from October to April, when warmer nights and the breeding season bring bandicoots and echidnas into easier view. Avoiding the December and January school holidays keeps groups small and scheduling flexible. The island is a 45-minute flight from Adelaide, or a 45-minute ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw.
