At a glance

THE PIG-in the Cotswolds occupies Barnsley House, a handsome 17th-century manor in the village of Barnsley, just outside Cirencester. It is one of the more distinctive hotels in the Cotswolds, not least because its gardens were created by Rosemary Verey, one of the most influential English garden designers of the 20th century. Her famous laburnum walk, knot garden, potager and ornamental gardens remain an important part of the estate.

The hotel is now part of THE PIG collection, known for turning historic country properties into chic, food-focused hotels. Here, the kitchen garden is central to the experience. Much of what appears on the restaurant menu is grown on the property, with other ingredients sourced from producers within roughly 25 miles. Across the road, The Village Pub gives guests a more casual option for dinner or drinks.

There are only 24 bedrooms, ranging from rooms in the original manor to more private hideaways in the grounds. One of the most romantic is the Secret Garden, tucked inside Verey’s walled garden, while the Stableyard offers larger rooms away from the main house.

  • A wonderfully relaxed base for a romantic Cotswolds trip

Accommodation

Rooms & Suites

There are just 24 bedrooms, spread across the main house and grounds, so there’s considerably more personality here than you’ll find in a conventional country hotel. The interiors use soft florals and traditional details, with many rooms looking across the gardens or surrounding Cotswolds countryside.

Room categories run from Little Rooms and Snug Rooms through Comfy, Comfy Luxe and Super Comfy Luxe, with larger and more unusual options among the Special Stays & Hideaways.

For something memorable, look beyond the standard bedrooms. The Secret Garden is a private hideaway within Rosemary Verey’s gardens with its own walled garden, while the secluded Stableyard Rooms have large mezzanine-style bedrooms. There are also options designed for families and groups.

Food & Drink

Food is central to THE PIG experience. The restaurant overlooks Rosemary Verey’s gardens and follows the hotel’s 25-mile menu, using ingredients picked from the Kitchen Garden alongside produce sourced from local Cotswolds suppliers.

The bar and lounges keep things distinctly local too, with British wines alongside spirits, lagers and ales from nearby producers. It’s the sort of hotel where drinks before dinner can very easily become an evening by the fire.

There’s also The Village Pub just across the road, serving British pub classics, local ales, bar snacks and wine.

Spa & Amenities

The Fieldhouse Spa sits among the orchards and meadows and offers individually tailored treatments using natural products. It gives the hotel a proper wellness element without turning the place into a full-scale resort.

Much of the pleasure is outside the spa. Guests can explore the original Arts and Crafts-style gardens, including the laburnum walk, knot garden and Tuscan temple, or use the hotel as a base for exploring Cirencester and classic Cotswolds villages such as Bibury and Burford.

The destination

England

England runs on Greenwich Mean Time, shifting to British Summer Time, one hour ahead, between late March and late October. The country is compact enough that no domestic journey is particularly arduous: London to Bath takes ninety minutes by train, London to York is two hours, London to Manchester just over two.
