Chateau Marmont is a legendary bohemian hotel above the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, modeled on a French château.
Chateau Marmont opened in 1929 and has spent a century as Hollywood’s most discreet hotel, a long- and short-term home for actors, writers, and musicians who value its privacy. The building is loosely based on the Château d’Amboise in the Loire. There are 63 rooms, suites, and cottages, plus four bungalows.
Dining and drinking happen in the restaurant and bar, spilling onto the garden terrace and into the lobby, a longtime setting for Hollywood deals. There is an outdoor pool among the gardens. This is not a spa hotel; the appeal is atmosphere, discretion, and a no-photos policy.
It is more a creative bolthole than a polished resort, and more for grown-ups than families. It suits couples, gay or straight, who want character over gloss. Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills are a short drive west, with the rest of LA below.

Accommodation
Bedrooms
All of the hotel’s rooms, suites and bungalows are like private homes. Most have kitchens and balconies. The standard bedrooms have queen size beds, garden views and 300 sq. ft of space.
Suites
You can opt for a Junior Suite (500 sq. ft.). The Premier One-Bedroom Suites have large living rooms, a balcony and terrace (800 sq. ft.). Two Bedroom Suites are much larger with queen and twin beds (950 sq. ft.).
Garden Cottage
The Garden Cottage has a queen-size bed, dining area and full kitchen. You’ll also have a living room with hardwood floors and a landscaped courtyard that leads to the pool.
Penthouse
You’re very own penthouse in Hollywood’s most historic hotel. It has a king-size bed, a large living area, a patio and a formal dining area (1,200 sq. ft.).

Dining
Chef Rhoda Magbitang creates classic American dishes with locally sourced ingredients. By the 90s, the hotel was enjoying a renaissance. You would see the biggest stars in Tinseltown wining and dining, hosting business meetings and throwing parties. No greater concentration of celebrities could be seen anywhere. This place was practically their office. It is a place to see and be seen to this day. The food is pretty fab too.
Activities
The hotel makes an easy base for the city’s nightlife and outdoors. The Whisky a Go Go, the Roxy, and the Comedy Store are within walking distance along the Strip, and the hiking trails of Runyon Canyon are a short drive for morning views over LA. By day, the pool is the draw; by night, the bar and lobby pull their own crowd. Galleries, vintage shops, and the studios fill the rest.
Location
Chateau Marmont stands above the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, set back from the road on a wooded rise, with the towers of the Strip and the lights of LA spread out below. Sunset’s clubs, restaurants, and music venues are on the doorstep, and Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive are a short drive west. Hollywood proper, the studios, and downtown are all within easy reach by car. Los Angeles International Airport is around 40 minutes.
