Madhya Pradesh is home to more wild tigers than any other state in India, and this journey takes you deep into the two forests that prove it. This tailor-made escape moves between Kanha and Bandhavgarh, the tiger reserves that anchor central India’s reputation as the country’s finest wildlife destination, for days built entirely around the rhythm of the jungle.

Kanha unfolds as a vast landscape of sal forest, bamboo groves, and open meadows, home not only to tigers but also to leopards, the rare hard ground barasingha deer, and an extraordinary range of birdlife.

Bandhavgarh, smaller and denser, has one of the highest tiger densities of any reserve in the country, its forests rising to the ruins of an ancient hilltop fort that watches over the valley below.

Between the two, you will spend your days on private jeep safaris with expert naturalists, tracking pug marks along dry riverbeds and waiting in comfortable silence as the forest reveals itself.

This is safari travel at its most immersive, away from India’s more familiar circuits and closer to the wilderness that first drew conservationists to this part of the country.

For those who want to pair the Golden Triangle’s palaces and forts with something wilder, our Rajasthan itineraries offer their own take on Indian wildlife in the Aravalli hills, though nothing in India quite matches Madhya Pradesh for sheer density of sightings.

Our LGBTQ+ travel specialists can build every detail of this itinerary around you, from private transfers to naturalist-led drives.

Days 1 to 2: Arrive Delhi, Onward to Kanha

Your journey begins with an overnight in Delhi, a chance to settle in after your international flight before an early onward flight the following morning to Jabalpur, the gateway to central India’s tiger country.

A private transfer carries you through the Madhya Pradesh countryside, past villages and farmland, to your lodge on the edge of Kanha National Park in time for your first afternoon safari.

Days 1 to 2: Arrive Delhi, Onward to Kanha

Days 3 to 5: Kanha National Park

Three full days are given over entirely to Kanha, one of India’s largest and most celebrated tiger reserves.

Mornings begin before sunrise, when the light is soft and the forest is at its most active, for open-jeep safaris with a private naturalist who reads the landscape for pug marks, alarm calls, and the movement of deer that signal a tiger close by.

Afternoons bring a second drive into a different zone of the park, each with its own character, from the open meadows favored by barasingha to the denser bamboo stands where leopards move unseen.

Evenings are unhurried, spent at your lodge with dinner under open skies and the sounds of the forest carrying after dark.

Days 3 to 5: Kanha National Park

Days 6 to 8: Bandhavgarh National Park and Departure

A private transfer brings you to Bandhavgarh, a smaller reserve with one of the highest concentrations of tigers anywhere in India.

The forest here rises toward the ruins of Bandhavgarh Fort, and safaris move through a landscape of sal forest, grassland, and sandstone cliffs where sightings come with striking regularity.

Your final days are spent on further game drives across the park’s different zones before a private transfer returns you to Jabalpur for your onward flight home.

Days 6 to 8: Bandhavgarh National Park and Departure

Good to Know

Core safari zones across Madhya Pradesh’s tiger reserves are open from mid-October through the end of June, and each park is divided into several zones that are rotated to give the forest time to rest.

Two safaris a day, one at dawn and one in the afternoon, give you the best possible chance of a sighting, and a naturalist accompanies every drive to help you read the signs of the forest around you.

Lodges throughout the region are built around the safari experience itself, with early starts, communal dining, and evenings spent comparing notes on the day’s sightings.
