Thai contemporary art is steeped in Buddhist thought and symbolic storytelling, many artists drawing on the cosmology of heaven, earth and hell and using traditional techniques to explore modern anxieties, with social rank, moral consequence, power and desire often sharing a single canvas. The collection follows these themes across generations, especially from the late twentieth century, with vast murals beside intensely detailed oils and figurative work that asks to be interpreted, not just looked at.

One of the most striking moments comes at The Bridge of the Universe, where a dark passage narrows your view before opening onto galleries of Buddhist cosmology, the entrance deliberately staged. Inside, enormous paintings of Heaven, Earth and Hell fill whole walls, each crowded with thousands of figures, deities, spirits, animals and people, some faces unmistakably modern, slipped quietly into traditional moral tales.

The museum also holds the world’s largest collection of work by Thawan Duchanee, one of Thailand’s most uncompromising artists, whose stark black-and-red paintings confront instinct, conflict and the darker side of human nature, a counterpoint to more decorative visions of spirituality.

On the top floor, the mood changes completely. A curved-roof gallery recalls a Victorian museum in London and holds the owner’s private collection of European Romantic and Victorian paintings, acquired through London’s Richard Green gallery, landscapes and portraits deliberately set apart from the Thai story below, an intentionally disorienting contrast that shows the breadth of the collector’s taste.
