Inside the New Velana Airport: What LGBTQ+ Travelers Need to Know

If you’ve been to the Maldives before, you’ll remember the arrival. You land in Malé after a long-haul flight, often fourteen hours or more, and walk into a terminal that felt like it was built for a country that stopped planning in the 1970s. Immigration queues that didn’t move. Baggage that took forever. A connection to the seaplane terminal that swallowed two or three hours before you’d even begun.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, that extended time in a country where same-sex relationships remain technically illegal added a particular edge to what should have been the beginning of a dream holiday. The Maldives has always been worth it. The arrival, frankly, was not.

That changed in July 2025, when the new Velana International Airport opened. And for our clients, it changes things considerably.

The Numbers That Actually Matter

The old terminal processed four million passengers through infrastructure built for one. The new one handles 7.5 million, with twenty immigration counters replacing the previous bottleneck and a baggage system that actually works. Forty-seven check-in desks. Climate control that holds up against the tropical heat. A space that feels like arrival infrastructure rather than an endurance test. What used to take three hours now takes around forty-five minutes. That’s not a marginal improvement. It’s a fundamentally different experience.

The Seaplane Terminal Is the Real Story

Most Out Of Office clients are heading to resorts beyond the immediate Malé area, which means a seaplane transfer. Previously, that transfer was where the experience really broke down. The old seaplane facility was a holding area in the most basic sense: you waited, often standing, with no real sense of when your departure would happen. Delays cascaded. The gap between landing in Malé and arriving at your resort could stretch to half a day.

The new seaplane terminal is the world’s largest, covering 18,000 square meters, with private lounges, cool towels, drinks, and departures that run to schedule because the facility can accommodate a hundred aircraft simultaneously. You board your seaplane knowing exactly when you’ll reach the resort. Your luggage is handled. The resort, in turn, knows when to expect you, which means your transfer, your room, and your first evening are all timed properly. For a destination built on precision luxury, it’s remarkable this didn’t exist until now.

What This Means for LGBTQ+ Travelers

The Maldives has a legal complexity that we’ve always been transparent about with our clients. Same-sex relationships are technically illegal under Maldivian law. It’s written into the books, and we don’t gloss over it. What’s also true, and what years of sending LGBTQ+ couples to the Maldives has confirmed, is that the resort islands operate as a world apart.

Tourism is the backbone of the Maldivian economy, and the resorts function as private jurisdictions where the rules are different. Alcohol flows freely at every resort despite being technically prohibited in the country. The same logic applies to how LGBTQ+ guests are received. Our clients, without exception, have felt welcomed, comfortable, and entirely at ease.

That said, the time spent in transit, through Malé airport and its surrounding public spaces, has always been the part of the journey that required a little more awareness. Not alarm, but awareness. The new Velana terminal doesn’t change the legal landscape. What it does is dramatically reduce the time you spend in it.

Forty-five minutes from landing to seaplane departure, in a modern, well-designed facility, is a very different proposition to three hours in a chaotic overcrowded terminal. For LGBTQ+ couples traveling to the Maldives for the first time in particular, that distinction matters.

Flights Have Improved Too

The expanded terminal capacity has had a direct effect on airline service into Malé, with more routes and increased frequency improving overall access to the islands.

For travellers coming from the US, this means better departure options and more flexible connections through Europe and Asia, including routes via cities such as London, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong. Flights are now better spaced, reducing the need for tight layovers and making the journey feel far more straightforward.

Reaching the Maldives is still a long journey, but improved scheduling and increased capacity mean it is now significantly easier and more comfortable than it once was.

The Resorts Haven’t Changed. The Journey to Reach Them Has.

From private island hideaways to overwater villas, the Maldives is designed entirely around the resort experience. Where you stay defines your trip, from the level of privacy to the overall feel of the island.

What has changed is the journey. With improved flight options and smoother connections, reaching these resorts is now far more straightforward, making the experience feel effortless from the moment you leave home.
