Budapest is a beautiful, easy city to visit, but Hungary’s laws on LGBTQ+ issues have been among the most restrictive in the European Union. Same-sex couples can register a partnership but cannot marry or adopt, legal gender recognition was ended in 2020, and laws passed in recent years restricted LGBTQ+ content and, in 2025, were used to ban Budapest Pride.
The march went ahead anyway, with record crowds, and in 2026, under a new government, Budapest Pride was authorized again. The political picture is changing, and we will give you the latest when you plan.
Day to day, visitors to Budapest rarely encounter problems. The city has a small but lively scene, and the hotels we book on both banks of the Danube are used to welcoming same-sex couples. Public affection is best kept low-key, especially outside central Budapest.
