Travel Information for Hungary

Hungary LGBTQ+ Rights

Hungary presents a complex and challenging environment for LGBTQ+ individuals, with recent years marked by both legal advancements and significant setbacks. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1962, and in 2009, Hungary introduced registered partnerships for same-sex couples, granting some legal rights but excluding adoption and joint parenting.

However, Hungary does not recognize same-sex marriage, and in 2020, the government amended the constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, effectively banning marriage equality. Additionally, the constitution now specifies that a person’s gender is determined at birth, eliminating the possibility of legal gender recognition for transgender and non-binary individuals.

Anti-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity exist in certain contexts, such as employment, but enforcement is inconsistent. Furthermore, Hungary has passed laws restricting LGBTQ+ content in media and education, equating it to content unsuitable for minors. These measures have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and the European Union, which see them as violations of LGBTQ+ rights.

Despite these challenges, Hungary has a resilient LGBTQ+ community. Budapest, the capital, is home to a visible LGBTQ+ scene, including bars, clubs, and the annual Budapest Pride, which serves as a platform for both celebration and protest. Advocacy organizations continue to work tirelessly to push back against discriminatory policies and promote acceptance.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, Budapest is generally safe, particularly in its more tourist-friendly areas, but discretion is advised. While Hungary remains a difficult environment for LGBTQ+ rights, the community’s resilience and ongoing activism reflect a determination to fight for equality and inclusivity.

What Everyone Does in Hungary

When it comes to luxury travel, most visitors to Hungary start their journey in Budapest, a city that effortlessly blends historic charm with contemporary elegance. Strolling along the iconic Chain Bridge or taking a Danube River cruise are quintessential experiences, offering breathtaking views of Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, and the city’s glittering skyline. The thermal baths, such as Széchenyi and Gellért, are another staple of Hungarian luxury travel, providing indulgent relaxation steeped in the country’s wellness traditions. Fine dining is also a must, with Budapest boasting Michelin-starred restaurants that elevate Hungarian cuisine to an art form.

Outside the capital, the scenic vineyards of Tokaj and Eger are top picks for wine enthusiasts. These regions, known for their world-class vintages like Tokaji Aszú, offer exclusive tasting experiences and luxurious stays in boutique wineries. Visitors also often explore the shores of Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest lake, where upscale resorts and private sailing excursions create an idyllic retreat from the bustling city life.

What Some People Do in Hungary

For those seeking a more curated experience, Hungary’s cultural gems and natural wonders beckon. In Budapest, some travelers venture beyond the main attractions to explore hidden gems like the Hospital in the Rock Museum or the lesser-visited Art Nouveau masterpieces scattered across the city. Private guided tours of the city’s ruin bars, paired with craft cocktail tastings, offer an insider’s view of Budapest’s vibrant nightlife scene.

Beyond Budapest, some luxury travelers enjoy bespoke experiences like horse-riding displays in the Puszta, Hungary’s Great Plain, where they can witness traditional horsemanship in an exclusive setting. Nature enthusiasts might opt for private excursions to Hortobágy National Park, home to unique wildlife and stunning vistas, or embark on hot air balloon rides over the serene countryside for a perspective few get to enjoy.

What No One Else Does in Hungary

For the ultimate in exclusivity, a handful of travelers dive into experiences that are truly off the beaten path. Imagine a private tour of Budapest’s underground labyrinths, where ancient caves and hidden passageways reveal the city’s secrets in an unforgettable way. Alternatively, exclusive access to an archaeological site or a private audience with a local historian provides unparalleled insights into Hungary’s rich past.

In the countryside, few indulge in tailored culinary adventures, such as truffle hunting in the forests of southern Hungary followed by a private feast featuring the day’s finds. Some may opt for an entirely private stay at a luxury estate or castle, complete with bespoke services like personal chefs and curated itineraries, offering an experience of Hungary that truly no one else does.

Getting to Hungary

Travelers from the UK can reach Hungary easily with direct flights from London and other major cities to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, with a flight time of approximately 2.5 hours. From the US, direct flights are available from select cities like New York, or with connections through major European hubs, making Hungary accessible in 9-12 hours depending on the route.
