A Private Heli-Hike on Franz Josef Glacier

Fly over West Coast rainforest to the upper ice of Franz Josef and explore its crevasses and blue ice on foot with your own guide.

Where Ice Meets Rainforest

Dense rainforest and fast rivers on New Zealand's West Coast

The West Coast of the South Island feels like another world, thick rainforest crowding the road, rivers running fast and clear and cloud banking up on the flanks of the Alps. Here a glacier reaches nearly to the coast, ice and jungle side by side, a combination found in very few places.

Your helicopter rises gently and clears the treetops within minutes. Suddenly the glacier is there, vast and beautiful, its surface broken into ridges and crevasses. You touch down well up the glacier, a long way above the terminal face most people view; the engine stops, silence falls, and you step out, your crampons gripping ice that is centuries old.

A Glacier on the Move

Ice towers and water channels on the surface of Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef is one of the world’s most accessible temperate glaciers. Heavy snowfall on the high peaks feeds it, and it pours quickly through steep ground, advancing and retreating with small shifts in climate. Unlike polar ice, it lives amid high rainfall and fairly mild temperatures, which creates striking forms, from gaping crevasses to seracs and meltwater runnels that are always shifting, so no two visits are alike.

Watched closely for more than a century, it now serves as a visible gauge of a warming climate, and its retreat in recent decades has changed access routes and made careful management essential. Exploring it on foot with experts gives you a deeper sense of both its importance and its beauty.

Why It Should Be Private

Guide and two hikers alone on a wide expanse of glacier ice

Standard glacier trips tend to follow fixed routes with larger parties, constrained by the clock and the ground. On a private heli-hike, with only your guide, you set the speed by how bold and curious you feel, the route is picked for the day’s ice rather than a set path, and there’s time to stop and understand what you’re seeing. With no other groups around, footsteps echo briefly and then fade, and the glacier feels immense and untouched, a sense of space shared excursions rarely give. It’s an unforgettable adventure for a couple or friends.

Blue Ice and Hidden Streams

Deep blue crevasse opening in the ice of Franz Josef Glacier

From where you land, the glacier stretches away in every direction. Far from plain white, the ice is banded in blue and gray, with glassy veins where daylight sinks deep. Fissures appear without warning, slim at the lip and opening below into caverns of intense blue; meltwater runs beneath thin ice bridges, heard before it’s seen; and formations rise and fall over time, molded by warmth and weight.

Your guide shows you what you’d otherwise miss: pressure ridges where the ice bends around buried rock, the snowfields feeding the glacier from above, and patches the glacier’s latest shifts have remodeled completely. The scale grows clearer with each step, and the shifting light keeps altering the ice’s hue and surface.

Moving Through the Landscape

For all the physical effort, nothing is rushed. There are plenty of pauses simply to stand and take it in, with only the wind, distant water and the odd crack of moving ice to hear. Out on the ice your perspective shifts completely: the glacier stops being a backdrop and becomes a landscape you travel through, and many people describe a profound respect for the powers shaping this place, and how lucky they felt to stand in the middle of it. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can fit the heli-hike into a West Coast journey with a welcoming lodge.
