Bungee and Skydiving in Queenstown, Privately Arranged

Jump from the bridge where commercial bungee began, then freefall over Lake Wakatipu from a plane chartered just for your group.

Born of Ingenuity

Queenstown on the shore of Lake Wakatipu beneath the mountains

The Otago gold rush of the 1860s made Queenstown, and its end nearly unmade it. As mining faded, the town nearly emptied before turning to tourism, first hiking and alpine access, then winter sports, and when Coronet Peak opened in 1947 as the world’s first commercial ski field, it proved extreme terrain could be made safe and profitable.

The next leaps came from local problem-solvers, not corporate planners. Bill Hamilton invented the jet boat in 1960 to handle shallow, rocky rivers; in 1988 AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch turned climbing-rope know-how and some clever engineering into the first paying bungee jumps anywhere, off the Kawarau Bridge; and two years later tandem skydiving went commercial here for the first time too. None of these were imported ideas. They grew out of this landscape, which rewarded resourcefulness over refinement.

The Original Bungee, with VIP Access

Historic Kawarau suspension bridge spanning the river gorge

The Kawarau Bridge is still the most historic bungee site anywhere: you drop 43 meters from a Category One listed suspension bridge that miners began crossing in 1880. The leap itself is always personal, but everything around it can be smoothed with private arrangements. With VIP access you skip the queues and arrive by private car, often as part of a tailor-made day with dedicated hosts looking after timing and logistics.

One of the site’s signatures is the water touch: with the river directly below, the jump masters can set the cord for anything from a fingertip graze of the blue-green water to a plunge right in. With no crowd behind you, the build-up feels calm and focused, time to grasp how it all works, where it all began and what you’re about to do, rather than being hurried to the edge. It’s a thrill to share with a partner or friends who dare.

Your Own Plane Above Lake Wakatipu

Tandem skydivers in freefall above Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables

NZONE leads the skydiving scene here, the operator that began commercial tandem jumps here in 1990, and for privacy it offers full charters of a Cessna Grand Caravan for your group alone. That changes everything from the start: the ascent turns into your own sightseeing flight, looping over the lake and the Alps as you climb. From fifteen thousand feet the panorama is uninterrupted in every direction, The Remarkables slicing jaggedly across the horizon.

You fall free for as long as a minute, hitting about two hundred kilometers an hour, and what sets Queenstown apart is how clearly you see the land below, ice-carved valleys, braided riverbeds and deep mountain lakes visible the whole way. With only your group and your tandem masters aboard, there’s no waiting in line, no staggered exits and no noise competing with your briefing or the climb.

Mountains and a Lightning-Bolt Lake

Saw-tooth ridge of The Remarkables above Lake Wakatipu

The setting heightens everything. The Remarkables are among just two ranges on earth aligned exactly north-south, their saw-tooth skyline feeling close from almost anywhere. Lake Wakatipu, shaped like a lightning bolt, ranks third in size among the country’s lakes and plunges to some 380 meters. A seiche, a standing wave, lifts and lowers its surface in a steady rhythm; scientists can explain it, but Māori tradition calls it the pulse of a giant lying asleep beneath. With depth and scale like this, the vertical drop of a jump or freefall feels even greater.

Why Private Makes Sense Here

Native bush and river gorge on conservation land near Queenstown

For all its popularity, Queenstown has chosen to favor quality over numbers, and many sites sit on Department of Conservation land in native forest, ravines and mountain valleys far from any town. Even on shared trips, every participant has their own jump master or tandem instructor; privately, that individual focus comes with time and space too, unhurried briefings, every question answered and seamless moves between activities. You can also schedule around weather windows, light and your own comfort instead of a timetable built for volume.

Safety You Can Relax Into

Instructor checking harness equipment before a jump

New Zealand has some of the world’s strictest adventure tourism rules, policed by the Civil Aviation Authority and land managers, with equipment inspected continuously, staff rigorously certified and procedures constantly refined. Far from intrusive, it gives you the confidence to focus on the experience rather than the risk, and in a private setting your guides can explain the systems in detail. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can build the day into a Queenstown stay at a welcoming lodge, and our New Zealand guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
