Highclere Castle and the Real World of Downton Abbey

Walk Bampton's village lanes, then enter Highclere before the public, from its famous library and staircase to a Tutankhamun exhibition.

A Family Home Since 1679

Long drive through parkland toward Highclere Castle

The Carnarvon family has called Highclere home since 1679, a house of Gothic and Italianate flourishes in rolling Hampshire parkland where family life has carried on almost without a break for over three centuries. From 2010, millions more came to know it as Downton Abbey, and the role introduced the estate to fans across the globe.

Your guide and driver pick you up in London, stopping at filming villages on the way before the house appears. The castle welcomes visitors on a limited number of days annually, so the day is planned around one of these, arriving ahead of general admission while the house still has the hush of a private home. It’s a treat of a day for a couple, friends or family who love the show.

Barry, Tutankhamun and the Crawleys

Highclere’s story goes far beyond television. Much of what you see was remodeled in the 1840s by Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Palace of Westminster, hence the Gothic drama so well suited to Downton’s aristocratic world so well. The 5th Earl added a quite separate claim to fame: in 1922, with Howard Carter, he funded and witnessed the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, commemorated today by an Egyptian exhibition in the basement.

The Downton team filmed at Highclere throughout the series, in partnership with the Earl and Countess, who stayed in residence while cameras rolled. The grand rooms, staircase and library familiar from the series are the rooms the family still uses, so what you saw is, almost always, simply how the house is. Nearby Bampton, which played the village of Downton, adds a second strand; its stone houses, church and green turn up episode after episode almost untouched, a filming location that needed almost no change to become what it portrayed.

Why Go Privately and Early

Quiet gardens at Highclere before general admission

Because Highclere opens on so few days, those days can be busy, with the show still hugely popular worldwide. Going privately, and early, gets you into the park and gardens ahead of everyone else.

Outside the house, your guide shapes the day around you, lingering in Bampton, slowing down in the grounds or adding more of the Cotswold countryside used in filming. Inside, Highclere’s own staff do the guiding, as house policy requires, and and no one knows the house and its treasures better, but you can still move at your own pace with them, your guide picking up the story again when you step outside.

From Bampton to the Grand Staircase

Grand staircase and library at Highclere Castle

The day usually starts in Bampton, walking the lanes and churchyard used as Downton village, your guide showing you Matthew Crawley’s front door, Downton’s church and the green that hosted scene after scene outdoors, all instantly recognizable and still a working English village, not a set. At Highclere, the long drive through the park toward that familiar silhouette is a moment in itself, however many episodes you’ve watched.

Inside, the house team take you through the grand reception rooms, among them the drawing room and library that framed many of the family’s big moments, up the grand staircase of countless dramatic entrances and exits, and past bedrooms still called by the characters’ names. The basement’s Egyptian exhibition is a deliberate change of tone and, for many, the day’s biggest surprise, because it’s a world away from the drama. The grounds, laid out in the naturalistic English landscape style, end the day gently, their formal beds, sweeping park and long views back toward the house that became the image of an entire television era.

Timed to Highclere’s Open Days

Out Of Office secures early access through established relationships, working around your dates to confirm availability as soon as possible given the limited season, with a private guide and driver for Bampton and the countryside, and castle staff inside. Transfers from London or elsewhere in southern England are included. Television didn’t need to create any of it; the rooms and the village were there, largely unchanged, long before the cameras came. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can build the day into your England trip, and our United Kingdom guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
