Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most romantic cities, with a dark, Gothic beauty that feels especially atmospheric once evening draws in. Medieval buildings crowd the Old Town, church spires punctuate the skyline and Edinburgh Castle looms over it all from its great volcanic rock.
For luxury travelers, Edinburgh is particularly rewarding when you go beyond simply seeing the landmarks. Explore the Old Town with your own guide, arrange a private whisky tasting or build an evening around one of the city’s excellent restaurants. During the Edinburgh Festival, the entire city becomes a stage.
More about Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a city where history remains unusually visible. The Royal Mile connects Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, passing closes, churches and centuries-old buildings along the way. You can spend an entire morning here without covering much more than a mile.
Across the valley, the New Town reveals another Edinburgh. Built largely during the Georgian period, its broad streets and handsome squares remain among the most desirable parts of the city. Many of Edinburgh’s best luxury hotels are found around here.
The city also has a well-established gay scene. Much of the nightlife has traditionally been concentrated around the area known as the Pink Triangle, close to the eastern end of Princes Street.
Edinburgh works well for a long weekend, but it becomes even more useful as the beginning of a journey through Scotland. After a few days in the capital, continue north with a private driver into the Highlands. You might stop at a whisky distillery along the way or disappear into a country-house hotel for a few nights.
For travelers coming from London, Scotland also provides a complete change of atmosphere without requiring another international flight. The train journey north is an experience in itself, particularly once the route reaches the coast.
However you build the trip, we’d give Edinburgh at least three nights.

A Gay Honeymoon in Scotland: Edinburgh and the Highlands

Is Edinburgh LGBTQ+ friendly?
In Edinburgh, same-sex relationships are legal, same-sex marriage is legal and workplace protections cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Equaldex gives Edinburgh an Equality Index of 67 out of 100.
Source: Equaldex, checked October 1, 2026.
Edinburgh is one of the UK’s most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations and has an established gay community of its own. Same-sex marriage is legal in Scotland, and legal protections cover sexual orientation and gender reassignment.
For visitors, LGBTQ+ life is particularly visible around the Pink Triangle, where several of the city’s best-known gay venues have traditionally been based. Edinburgh Pride also brings the community together for the city’s annual Pride celebration.
The Festival makes that visibility even greater each August, when LGBTQ+ artists and audiences arrive from around the world.
As LGBTQ+ travel specialists, we can advise on welcoming hotels and current nightlife while arranging the wider trip around the Scotland you actually want to experience. If Edinburgh is followed by smaller towns or remote areas of the Highlands, we can also choose the right properties and local partners for the journey.

Plan Your Gay Honeymoon in Scotland
Scotland has been legal for same-sex marriage since 2014. More than a decade on, it has gotten very good at it. The celebrants are experienced, the best hotels understand what the occasion means, and the country brings none of the ambiguity that surrounds honeymoons in destinations where the legal framework is newer or the welcome less certain. The scenery helps. So does the whisky.

Royal Scotland: Exploring Balmoral and the Highlands
Scotland holds a uniquely cherished place in the royal heart, with the Highlands serving as the British monarchy's most beloved retreat for over 170 years. From Queen Victoria's love affair with the Scottish landscape (and allegedly her servant, John Brown) to King Charles III's deep environmental connection to the region, the royal family's Highland sanctuary has shaped both monarchy and landscape in profound ways.

General information
Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital and sits on the country’s eastern side, close to the Firth of Forth. It’s a relatively compact city, although the hills and cobbled streets mean distances can feel rather more substantial once you start walking them.
The historic center is divided broadly between the Old Town and New Town. Together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they feel remarkably different. The Old Town grew organically around the castle and Royal Mile. The New Town was laid out from the late 18th century, bringing grand Georgian streets and squares to the other side of what is now Princes Street Gardens.
August changes Edinburgh completely. The city’s major festivals draw performers and visitors from around the world, filling theaters, temporary venues and spaces you would never normally expect to contain a stage.
Outside festival season, Edinburgh is calmer but never sleepy. It’s a year-round cultural destination and an excellent introduction to Scotland for first-time visitors.

Things to Do in Edinburgh
Start at Edinburgh Castle, which has been at the center of some of the most dramatic episodes in Scottish history. Kings and queens lived here, armies fought for control of it and Mary, Queen of Scots gave birth to the future James VI within its walls. He would later become James I of England, uniting the crowns of Scotland and England under one monarch.
The castle also houses the Honours of Scotland, Scotland’s historic Crown Jewels, alongside the Stone of Destiny, used in Scottish royal inaugurations for centuries. With a private guide, the succession of old rooms and military buildings becomes a much richer story of royal ambition, murder, religion and the long struggle over who controlled Scotland.
From there, walk down the Royal Mile rather than simply ticking off individual sights. The narrow closes leading away from it reveal an older Edinburgh that isn’t always obvious from the main street.
At the bottom sits the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King’s official residence in Edinburgh. When royal use allows, parts of the palace are open to visitors.
Art lovers should make time for Scotland’s national collections, while travelers interested in the darker side of Edinburgh’s history can explore the vaults and streets beneath the modern city with a specialist guide.
Explore Edinburgh's Gay Scene
Edinburgh has a long-established gay scene and is one of the easiest UK cities for LGBTQ+ travelers to explore.
The best-known concentration of gay venues is around the Pink Triangle, near the top of Leith Walk and the eastern end of Princes Street. It’s within walking distance of much of central Edinburgh, so you don’t need to choose between staying near the sights and going out at night.
Edinburgh’s LGBTQ+ life extends well beyond dedicated gay venues. The city has a large student population and a strong arts culture, while the Festival brings an enormous influx of LGBTQ+ performers and audiences every summer.
For gay travelers, that means Edinburgh works without having to build the entire visit around the gay scene. Spend the afternoon at the castle, have dinner somewhere special and go for drinks afterwards without crossing half the city.
Getting to Edinburgh
Edinburgh is easy to reach from both within the UK and overseas. Edinburgh Airport (EDI) sits just outside the city and has direct connections with major European hubs, alongside transatlantic services from North America. Out Of Office can arrange a private transfer from the airport directly to your hotel.
If you’re combining Edinburgh with London, consider taking the train rather than flying. Direct services from London King’s Cross arrive at Edinburgh Waverley in around four and a half hours on the fastest journeys. The route becomes particularly scenic as you travel north along the coast, and Waverley Station puts you right in the heart of Edinburgh when you arrive.
Edinburgh also makes a natural gateway to the rest of Scotland. Glasgow is easily reached by train, while travelers continuing into the Highlands may prefer a private driver, particularly if the journey includes country hotels or distilleries away from the main rail routes.
For a longer UK vacation, Edinburgh works particularly well after London. We can arrange the rail journey, luggage and transfers as part of the itinerary, then have a driver meet you when you’re ready to leave Edinburgh and head deeper into Scotland.
