Jaguars and Giant Otters: A Private Safari in the Pantanal

The world's largest tropical wetland, explored by boat, on foot and on horseback with guides who read every track and call.

Wildlife in the Open

Wetlands and gallery forest in the Pantanal

Unlike the Amazon, the Pantanal doesn’t hide its animals. Stretching across western Brazil and over the borders of Bolivia and Paraguay, this immense wetland is a landscape of grasslands, gallery forest, slow rivers and seasonal lagoons, with long views in every direction. At more than 70,000 square miles, no tropical wetland in the world is bigger, and a private safari lets you explore it from the water, on foot and in the saddle.

What the Riverbanks Reveal

Caiman in the shallows of a Pantanal river

Mornings start early, as the light slowly picks out shapes along the water. Caiman lie still in the shallows, capybara families graze together, and jabirus, South America’s tallest flying bird, stand sentinel against the pale sky. When a jaguar appears, it’s usually quiet and unhurried: a female stepping out of the shade to walk the bank, pausing to listen, then bending to drink.

Families of giant otters fish as a team, popping up beside the boat before vanishing in unison. Hyacinth macaws raise their chicks in manduvi trees and split palm nuts with a crack you can hear from afar, and giant anteaters cross the open southern plains. After dark, spotlights catch the red eyes of caiman, and an ocelot may flicker across the track.

Following the Water’s Rhythm

The yearly flood shapes everything. In the rainy months water spreads over the plains; in the dry season it draws back into shrinking rivers and lagoons, pulling wildlife with it. That’s why few places anywhere offer such reliable wild jaguar sightings. From July to October, jaguars hunt caiman and capybara along exposed banks. From November to March, the green season floods the plains and birdlife takes center stage.

Days follow the climate: an early start while it’s cool and predators are moving, a canoe outing or nature walk after breakfast, a lazy midday in a shaded hammock, then a late-afternoon drive that may turn up marsh deer or foxes.

North or South?

Horseback riding across the Pantanal plains

The Northern Pantanal, reached from Cuiabá, is the place for jaguar tracking, along the Transpantaneira, an unpaved road that rattles over upwards of a hundred timber bridges spanning creeks alive with caiman and wading birds, with sightings especially regular along the Cuiabá River system. Fly into Campo Grande instead and the south is cattle-ranch country, where conservation and ranching sit side by side and horseback rides along old cattle trails and anteater tracking join the river safaris. Places to stay run from simple riverside lodges around Porto Jofre to long-established eco-lodges further south, and most stand on stilts above the floodwater.

Why a Private Safari Matters Here

Great Pantanal sightings come down to timing, river knowledge and skilled guiding. Experienced boat pilots know the jaguars’ territories well enough to keep a considerate distance instead of rushing in. On land, naturalists read prints in the dust, recognize monkeys’ alarm calls and tell fresh tracks from old. Small boats and few vehicles keep noise and disturbance low.
