Sitges vs Mykonos – which is better?

Comparing Europe's most popular gay vacation spots

Sitges and Mykonos are the most popular gay travel destinations in Europe. During peak season, LGBTQ+ travelers outnumber straight people by some distance. There are many bars and restaurants to explore in both destinations, as well as excellent beaches. You can also combine Sitges with Barcelona or Mykonos with Santorini (or other nearby Greek islands). Every LGBTQ+ traveler has to visit Sitges and Mykonos at least once in a lifetime. Let’s find out which destination is best for you.

Beaches in Sitges and Mykonos

Sitges is known for its seven beaches, ranging from relaxed, family-friendly shores to the ever-popular gay beach opposite Hotel Calipolis. Sitges’ Mediterranean coastline is lined with golden sands, clear waters, and beach clubs, so it’s a great beach destination. As Sitges is compact, you can easily migrate from the beach to the bars and restaurants in town.

Mykonos, on the other hand, is famed for its world-class beaches like Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach, which are legendary LGBTQ+ destinations – as Instagram users will know. At Agios Ioannis, you’ll see stunning views of Delos Island – perfect for a more peaceful, picturesque beach day. If you’re looking for a high-energy beach experience with DJs and party vibes, Mykonos is the place to be. For a quieter experience, Elia Beach offers more privacy and less crowding.

Gay Scenes in Sitges and Mykonos

Sitges is, by far, the gayest town in Spain. It’s been a magnet for LGBTQ+ travelers for many years. The town is home to numerous gay bars, clubs, and beach parties, with spots like El Horno and Parrots Pub being local favorites. At Parrots, you’ll see people spilling from the bars onto the streets and mingling. It’s very easy to get talking to people. The annual Sitges Pride attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. As Sitges is small, you really get the full Pride experience as it takes over the entire town.

Mykonos has an equally vibrant gay scene, known for its high-end beach clubs and exclusive parties. Super Paradise Beach Club is a must-visit, offering a wild party atmosphere during the summer months. The island is home to Jackie O’, a world-famous gay bar named after the former first lady (she married a Greek shipping magnate, after all). Mykonos is a true party destination but it’s a glamorous one. The international gay jet set has claimed Mykonos as their own. Mykonos is the place to go if you like to party in a more exclusive scene.

Luxury Travel: Elevating Your Getaway

Sitges has gradually become more of a luxury destination in recent years, with upscale beach clubs and fine dining options popping up along its picturesque coast. You can enjoy a chic Mediterranean getaway in Sitges. Take private boat tours, enjoy gourmet meals in Michelin-starred restaurants, and upscale shopping in the town center.

Mykonos takes luxury to another level, attracting celebrities, socialites, and high-net-worth individuals from around the globe. The island boasts private villa rentals, luxury yacht charters, and world-class restaurants. Whether you’re lounging at a five-star resort, enjoying a sunset on a private yacht, or dining in one of the island’s elite restaurants, you’ll see why Mykonos is a byword for luxury travel.

Comparing hotels in Sitges and Mykonos

Sitges has several nice hotels and private villas but it’s yet to emerge as a major luxury hotel destination. Many LGBTQ+ travelers stay at Hotel Calipolis, the biggest hotel in town, for its easy access to the beach and the bars. As Sitges is such a tourist magnet, it’s likely to develop a bigger luxury hotel scene.

Mykonos is known for its ultra-luxurious, making it a top choice if you’re looking to splash out.  The Myconian Collection properties such as Myconian Naia or Myconian Avaton are perennial favorite for Out Of Office travelers. Another highlight is Bill & Coo Mykonos, a stunning hotel overlooking Mykonos’ famous windmills.

When is the best time to visit Sitges and Mykonos?

The peak season for Sitges, Spain, typically runs from June to September, with the height of the summer season in July and August. During this period, the town’s beaches, bars, and Sitges Pride festival in June are packed with tourists.

Mykonos also reaches its peak season in July and August. The island is especially vibrant during these summer months, with warm weather, beach clubs, and buzzing nightlife. The island is most crowded during July and August when international visitors flock for the famous Mykonos Pride event and other summer festivals. The shoulder months of May, June, and September also remain popular, offering milder temperatures and slightly fewer crowds. Out of season, however, most businesses in Mykonos close.

So, are you going to Sitges or Mykonos?

We’d suggest Sitges if you’d like a more casual party vacation in the Mediterranean with access to a gay beach. It’s only 40 minutes to Barcelona on the train, so you must take a trip to the big city or spend a few nights in both Barcelona and Sitges. Supposing you’d like a more upscale vacation with a range of luxury hotels, restaurants and whitewashed shopping streets, Mykonos is the clear favorite.
