The Mountain Behind Every View

Mount Otemanu rises 727 meters from the middle of Bora Bora and can be seen from every corner of the island and its lagoon. It’s the first thing most people notice on arrival and the backdrop to every view from an overwater deck, yet the usual itinerary revolves around the lagoon, the reef and the motu, leaving the mountain as scenery.

A private dawn hike on its lower slopes with a local guide changes that. The summit itself is off-limits, its last crag sheer, unstable basalt, but the lower trail and the shoulders of the ridge lead to viewpoints where the whole island makes sense at once: lagoon, barrier reef, motu and open Pacific together. Legends, Temples and a Sunken Volcano

Otemanu is usually translated as “the peak which sucks up living things”, perhaps a nod to its sheer basalt walls or the strong winds at the top. Legend tells of a god’s spirit coming down on a rainbow to Bora Bora, the first land and the sanctuary of the ancestors, called on by warriors for strength and by priests to bring rain. Ancient marae, stone temple platforms of the Maohi people, are scattered over the lower slopes, and the cave of Ana o Pea near the ridge was used for ceremonies and burials for several centuries.

Bora Bora began three to four million years ago as a hot-spot shield volcano. Once it went extinct it started to sink while a coral reef grew around it, forming today’s lagoon and barrier reef; Otemanu and neighboring Mount Pahia are what remain of the old volcanic core. Knowing that, the view reads differently: the lagoon is where the volcano once stood, now filled with water and coral. In the Second World War the island was a US refueling base in the Pacific, and the mountain’s high ground carried radar and guns, whose remains still lie on the lower slopes and ridge.

The lower trail has no maintained path, no signs and no facilities. It takes a guide who knows the ground, the way up to the ridge viewpoints and the stretches where loose volcanic rock and thick growth call for care. Up Through the Forest to the Ridge

You set off in darkness, timed to reach the ridge at sunrise. The lower slopes are thick with ferns, pandanus and tangles of exposed roots over volcanic rock, where you’ll need hands as well as feet. The air cools as you climb and the steamy forest floor gives way to more open ground.

From the first ridge viewpoint you look east over the lagoon, the motu lying low and green on the water and the reef drawn where turquoise meets the deeper blue of the Pacific. Up here, you can see how the reef grew around the vanished volcano.
