How to Choose a Maldives Resort: The Questions We Ask Every Client

There are more than 150 resorts in the Maldives. Before our team recommends a single one, we ask these questions.

There are more than 150 resorts in the Maldives. They sit across 26 atolls, range from barefoot casual to seriously grand, and vary enormously in what they actually deliver once you arrive. Choosing between them on the basis of a website and a few TripAdvisor reviews is, at best, a partial picture.

Our team has visited hundreds of Maldives resorts between them. We know which properties photograph better than they live, which ones have improved dramatically in the past two years, and which upgrades are worth asking for and which ones aren’t. Every time a new client comes to us wanting to go to the Maldives, we work through the same set of questions before we recommend a single property. Here they are.

How long are you going for?

This matters more than most people realise. The Maldives is a destination that rewards stillness, but it also has a natural rhythm. Four nights is enough to decompress and not much more. Seven nights is the sweet spot for most couples. Ten nights or more requires either a resort with genuine depth, a two-resort itinerary, or a very clear appetite for doing very little for an extended period. None of those answers is wrong, but they point to very different properties.

What does your ideal day actually look like?

Not the brochure version. The real version. Some clients want to be in the water by 7am with a dive guide and back on the house reef before breakfast. Others want to order room service, read for three hours, and make it to the spa by noon. Most want something in between, but the balance matters. A resort with an extraordinary dive programme and a mediocre spa is a different recommendation to one where the wellness offering is the whole point.

How important is food?

Maldives resorts vary significantly in their dining. Some properties have one restaurant and a limited menu that begins to repeat itself by day four. Others have six or seven outlets, visiting chef programmes, and wine lists that would hold their own in any European city. If food is central to how you experience a holiday, that narrows the field considerably and it should.

Do you want to be able to leave the resort?

Some atolls sit close enough to local islands that an excursion feels natural and easy. Others are so remote that leaving the property is a logistical undertaking. Neither is a problem, but they suit different travelers. Clients who want to experience a little Maldivian local life, visit a fishing village, or break up the stay with something beyond the resort boundary need to be in a different atoll to clients who want total immersion in a single property.

What’s your transfer tolerance?

This is the question most people forget to ask. Getting to your resort involves either a seaplane, a speedboat, or a combination of both. Seaplane transfers are extraordinary, particularly at sunrise or sunset, but they are also weather dependent, daylight dependent, and typically run to a schedule. Speedboat transfers can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours depending on the atoll. If one of you is prone to seasickness or the idea of a long boat transfer after a ten-hour flight sounds like a poor start, that shapes the recommendation significantly.

What’s your budget actually for?

There is a meaningful difference in the Maldives between spending £600 a night and £1,500 a night, and another meaningful difference between £1,500 and £4,000. The question is not just what your total budget is but where you want to spend it. Some clients prefer a more modest room category at an exceptional resort. Others want the best villa at a property one tier down. We help you work out which approach gives you the better experience for your specific priorities.

Is this a honeymoon, and does that need handling in any particular way?

For same-sex couples especially, this question matters. Not every resort handles a honeymoon booking with the same instinct. We know which properties extend genuine honeymoon benefits to same-sex couples without needing to be asked twice, which managers personally ensure the details are right, and which resorts have gone further than most in making LGBTQ+ couples feel entirely at ease. That knowledge is not available on any booking platform.

Why this process matters

The Maldives is not a small purchase. It is often a once-in-a-lifetime trip, or at minimum a trip that carries significant expectation. Getting the resort wrong, arriving somewhere that turns out to be the wrong fit, and spending the first two days recalibrating is a particular kind of disappointment.

Our team has done the groundwork so you don’t have to. We’ve stayed at the resorts, eaten the food, taken the transfers, and asked the same questions we’re asking you. The recommendation we make at the end of that conversation is specific to you, not to whoever searched the same query last week.
