A Winter Home Between Two Seas

Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi built this villa between 1905 and 1912 as a winter home, and her passion for art, design and travel can be seen in every detail. She chose the narrowest point of Cap Ferrat, where you can see the Mediterranean on both sides, and imagined an Italian Renaissance-style villa inspired by her beloved ocean liners, a theme that runs through both the house and its gardens.

With the architects Jacques Marcel Auburtin and Aaron Messiah, she filled the interiors with rare porcelain, French furniture, tapestries, sculpture and paintings, each room devoted to a different period. Around the house she laid out nine themed gardens, among them French, Japanese, Florentine, Spanish, Provençal, Exotic and Rose. The French garden, laid out like a ship’s deck, is still the highlight, its fountains lined up toward the sea as if setting a course.

For all her care, she lived here mostly in winter. When she died in 1934 she left the villa and its contents to the Académie des Beaux-Arts; it opened as a museum in 1937, needed major restoration after the Second World War, and is now run by Culturespaces as one of the Riviera’s most visited cultural sites.

The House Opens Early, for You Alone

The villa is intimate, and in normal hours its key rooms feel cramped, with groups bunching under the chandeliers, in the Porcelain Room and along the balconies over the gardens. It’s hard, amid all that, to properly appreciate the house’s charm or the thinking behind Béatrice’s collecting.

Next comes the Porcelain Room, home to one of the Riviera’s best collections of Sèvres and other European porcelain; with nobody else there, the color and skill are easy to appreciate, and tiny details of painting and glaze stand out against the pale walls.

The Venetian and Gothic rooms reflect her love of Italian art and medieval forms, their carved wood, painted panels and sculpture only fully legible in the quiet, and your guide links them to the European movements she admired. Upstairs, the private apartments feel surprisingly domestic: the bedrooms and dressing rooms show her taste for refined simplicity over grand display, and in places you can see how conservators preserved original colors and materials.

Nine Gardens in the Stillness

Outside, the gardens spill across terraces that slope gently toward the edges of the peninsula, each shaped by a different culture. The Japanese garden’s water and stones are a calm foil to the formal French garden, the Florentine garden feels sculptural, and the Exotic garden is all bold silhouettes of rare plants. Walking them before the fountains start their timed shows brings a rare stillness.
