Yosemite Without the Crowds, with a Private Guide

Reach Tunnel View and Glacier Point before the day-trippers, then head for Hetch Hetchy, Tuolumne Meadows or Clouds Rest with a private guide.

Yosemite as It Deserves

Granite cliffs and waterfalls of Hetch Hetchy Valley

Everyone knows the classic shots: Half Dome framed from the tunnel viewpoint, Yosemite Falls thundering down, the valley glowing at sunrise. They’re genuine. So is standing before them among thousands of other people, and that isn’t what one of the world’s great landscapes deserves. Up in the northwest corner, Hetch Hetchy draws barely one visitor in a hundred, though its cliffs and falls rival anything on the main valley floor; high up, Tuolumne Meadows spreads out in huge alpine sweeps where you’ll meet only a handful of hikers; and from Clouds Rest you actually look down on Half Dome, a finer panorama than its own summit, without needing a permit or sharing the trail with crowds. The secret is when you go, which way you go and where, and it makes an unforgettable trip for a couple, friends or family.

Before Sunrise, Then Beyond the Valley

You set out with your guide in the dark, the surest way to see the most photographed viewpoints without the crowds, since Tunnel View, the Mist Trail and Glacier Point are transformed at dawn, long before the day visitors start arriving around nine. Then you leave the valley floor behind. Depending on the season, that might mean driving Tioga Road into the high country, walking among the giant sequoias in the Merced or Tuolumne groves, or exploring the Wawona trails by the southern gate, all with Yosemite’s trademark grandeur but none of the summer gridlock that plagues the valley in June, July and August. You’ll stay outside the park or in one of its few lodges, chosen equally for location and quality.

The hard part is not finding a beautiful place. It is finding the right one for you.

Why a Private Guide

Private guide pointing out the high country from a granite ridge

Without a plan, Yosemite can be as much a logistics puzzle as a nature trip: finding a parking space, booking entry slots, securing permits and coping with the throngs at the big sights. A private guide takes all of that off your hands, choosing each day’s route by where the park will shine given the weather, trail conditions and crowds, so your attention stays on the scenery, not the logistics.

The Yosemite Most People Miss

Another Yosemite exists that the majority simply never find. It isn’t closed off; it just takes an alternative strategy, rising earlier, choosing the lesser-known paths and trusting a guide who can change course as conditions shift. It’s quieter, more thoughtful and altogether more moving than the valley in the midday summer crush. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can combine it with San Francisco or a wider California road trip, and our USA guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
