Peru Gay Honeymoons

Peru isn’t typically the first country that comes to mind for a gay honeymoon, and the legal picture explains some of that: same-sex marriage isn’t recognized nationally, and attitudes vary considerably between Lima and the more rural parts of the country. None of that changes what the destination actually offers: Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and Lake Titicaca sit alongside each other in a way almost nowhere else in the world can match.

What sets Peru apart is the range packed into a single trip; coastal desert, Andean peaks, and Amazon rainforest are all within a few hours of each other, something few countries this size can claim.

A honeymoon here can move from sea level to over 11,000 feet and back down into cloud forest without ever feeling like separate trips stitched together, and the culture shifts just as much: Lima’s Spanish colonial core, Cusco’s Incan foundations still visible under it, and communities in the highlands that have kept traditions largely intact for centuries.

Lima works well as the trip’s opening chapter, a coastal capital with a genuine restaurant scene, several of South America’s best-regarded kitchens among them, and a nightlife district in Barranco that’s grown steadily over the past decade. From there, Cusco sits at the center of the more historic leg of the trip, ringed by the Andes and close enough to the Sacred Valley to reach on a day trip, past Incan ruins and market towns that predate the Spanish arrival by centuries.

Machu Picchu itself is worth building the whole honeymoon around. Arriving early, before the day’s crowds reach the site, is the difference between an ordinary visit and one of the more genuinely striking mornings a couple can spend together. Lake Titicaca, a few hours further on, closes the trip out at a slower pace, with floating reed islands and a stillness that contrasts well with the ruins and altitude of the days before.

Planning a Gay Honeymoon in Peru

Lima carries almost all of Peru’s LGBTQ+ nightlife. Miraflores and Barranco hold the bulk of the city’s gay bars and clubs, drag shows are a regular fixture on weekends, and same-sex couples can expect the same treatment as anywhere else at hotels used to hosting international travelers.

Outside the capital, the scene thins out considerably, Cusco and the smaller towns along the tourist trail are welcoming enough in practice, but there’s little in the way of a dedicated gay nightlife once you’re outside Lima.

That’s worth knowing when planning the trip, though it doesn’t have to change much about the itinerary itself. Most of a Peru honeymoon happens outdoors or at ruins rather than in bars, and hotels along the route, from boutique properties in the Sacred Valley to lodges near Lake Titicaca, are well accustomed to same-sex couples booking joint suites without any friction.

For a last stretch focused purely on nightlife and beach time, Máncora on the northern coast draws a younger, international crowd and a livelier bar scene than anywhere outside Lima, a good option for couples who want to end the honeymoon somewhere lower-key than the Andes.

Why Peru?

Incan ruins including Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley

2

Andes, Amazon, and coastal desert in one trip

3

Centuries of Incan and Spanish colonial heritage

4

Lima's LGBTQ+ nightlife in Miraflores and Barranco

Rainbow Mountain

Things To Do In Peru

Rainbow Mountain, a few hours from Cusco, has become one of the more sought-after day trips in the country, its naturally striped slopes the result of mineral deposits rather than anything artificial. The altitude makes for a demanding hike, over 17,000 feet at the summit, so a day or two acclimatizing in Cusco beforehand is worth building into the schedule.

The Nazca Lines, a series of enormous geoglyphs etched into the desert floor centuries ago, are best seen from a small chartered flight, the only way to make out the full shape of the hummingbird, the monkey, or the spider from above.

For couples who want a taste of the Amazon without committing days to it, a short flight from Cusco or Lima reaches jungle lodges around Puerto Maldonado, with guided canoe trips and night walks turning up wildlife that’s impossible to see from anywhere else on the trip.

A ride on the Belmond Andean Explorer, a luxury train running between Cusco, Lake Titicaca, and Arequipa, threads through some of the highest rail routes in the world, and gives couples a way to cover long distances in comfort rather than by road.

Best Time For A Gay Honeymoon In Peru

May through September is Peru’s dry season and the most reliable window for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, with clear skies and cool, comfortable days, though June through August is also the busiest, so Inca Trail permits should be booked several months ahead.

April and October to November are quieter shoulder months with generally good weather and considerably fewer crowds at the main sites. December through March is the wet season, with the classic four-day Inca Trail closed each February for maintenance, though Machu Picchu itself remains open via train.

Best Places To Combine For A Peru Honeymoon

Lima, known for having one of South America’s best food scenes, anchors a tailor-made Peru itinerary and pairs naturally with Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu as the core of most Peru honeymoons. Couples typically spend a day acclimatizing in Cusco, which sits above 11,000 feet, before heading into the Sacred Valley.

Couples with ten days or more often extend into the Amazon, based out of Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos, or add Lake Titicaca for a slower final stretch before flying home from Lima or Cusco.

The Galapagos Islands, part of Ecuador, are a popular addition for couples with two weeks or more, reached via a flight from Lima to Quito or Guayaquil and on to the islands, and offer a completely different, wildlife-focused final stretch of the honeymoon.

FAQs

Is Peru safe and welcoming for a gay honeymoon?

Peru decriminalized same-sex relationships decades ago but does not legally recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions. Lima and Cusco’s tourist areas are generally comfortable for same-sex couples, particularly at the hotel level, though rural Andean communities are more conservative, so a measure of discretion outside hotels is sensible.

How many days should we plan for a Peru honeymoon?

Eight to ten days covers Lima, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu without rushing, including a day to acclimatize to Cusco’s altitude. Longer trips of twelve to fourteen days allow for an Amazon or Lake Titicaca extension.

Do we need to worry about altitude?

Cusco and the Sacred Valley sit well above 10,000 feet, and most travelers feel some effect for a day or two. Building in a slow first day, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol on arrival all help considerably.
