Delos from Mykonos: A Private Day on Apollo’s Island

Of all the excursions in the Cyclades, the crossing from Mykonos to Delos has the most substance. UNESCO lists the whole island, and nobody lives there now except a handful of archaeologists and site keepers. Greek myth makes it the birthplace of the twins Apollo and Artemis. Few places in the Mediterranean have been dug as thoroughly: you walk among temples and homes, along streets paved in marble, over mosaics still in their original floors, and up to a theater cut into the slope that could seat over five thousand.

A Free Port of Thirty Thousand

For about ten centuries this small island ranked among the busiest sacred and trading hubs of ancient Greece. In the second century BC it was a tax-free port, a center of the slave trade across the eastern Mediterranean, and a city of some thirty thousand, and that wealth still shows. The House of Dionysus is named for a mosaic of the god astride a tiger, its colors bright after two thousand years; the Houses of the Masks and of the Dolphins are just as well kept, with some of the finest Hellenistic mosaic work anywhere.

The most familiar sight is the row of lions, sculpted in the 600s BC from marble quarried on Naxos to watch over the Sacred Lake. Those on the terrace now are weatherproof replicas; five of the originals are kept in the island’s modest museum a few minutes’ walk away.

Allow it an hour, for the lions and for its rare Cycladic figurines. Walk up to Isis’s temple, above the houses, for the best view over the ruins, with the sea opening toward Rhenia and the islands to the south, or give twenty minutes to the climb up Mount Kynthos, the highest ground on Delos, to take in the full size of the ancient city.

Why a Private Guide Is Worth It

The standard half-day outing sets off at 9 or 10 am and takes about four hours, crossings included, with between an hour and a half and two hours ashore. Delos is dense with detail that an expert brings to life, and a group tour hurries you past it. From Mykonos to Delos

Part of the pleasure of Delos is the contrast with the island you have just left behind. Mykonos is the Cyclades at its most social: beach clubs, late dinners, whitewashed lanes packed after dark and one of the Mediterranean’s best-known gay party scenes. Half an hour across the water, almost all of that disappears.

Delos is archaeological and strangely still, with little to distract from the ruins and the bare Cycladic landscape. Where Mykonos feels immediate and hedonistic, Delos feels ancient and almost numinous, an island once considered sacred and still capable of feeling set apart from the modern world.

Seeing the two together is what makes the excursion so memorable. In the space of a day, you move between two completely different versions of the Cyclades: the sacred and the social, ancient ruins and contemporary Mykonos. Few journeys in the islands offer quite so much contrast across such a short stretch of sea.

Getting There and What to Bring

The boats go from Mykonos Town’s Old Port, near the Town Hall, and the crossing lasts half an hour to forty-five minutes, weather permitting. Services run April to November: several sailings a day in high summer, mornings only either side of it. Note that the site shuts on Tuesdays.

There’s no shade anywhere on Delos. It’s treeless and fully exposed, and in summer the thermometer often climbs past thirty-five degrees. Take a wide hat, high-factor sun cream and two liters of water per person at the very least, plus sturdy shoes for the ancient paving and rough paths. The island’s only café, by the museum, is tiny and has little choice, so pack something to eat.

Add an Afternoon Off Rhenia

For a longer day at sea, Delos pairs beautifully with Rhenia next door, an empty, unbuilt island of sheltered bays and clear, cool water, the kind of swimming that makes a Cycladic afternoon. Combined cruises usually spend the morning ashore on Delos with a guide, then drop anchor off Rhenia for a few hours and serve lunch on board: the gentlest way to follow a morning of history with an easy afternoon.

When to Go

Aim for late spring or early autumn, from May into June or September into early October, when the light is kinder, the heat manageable and the site much quieter than in high summer. Whatever the month, go in the morning, because summer afternoons can be brutal. The one exception is the sunset sailing, leaving around four or five and returning as the light fades over the Aegean, a lovely option if you’ve done the morning route before.
