Mexico Weather and Events in September

What’s the weather like in Mexico in September?

In September, the rainy season in Mexico begins to taper off, but there is still a chance of tropical storms and high humidity. While the rainfall may not be as heavy as in previous months, it’s still a good idea to come prepared with waterproof clothing and accessories. The temperatures remain hot, so lightweight and breathable clothing is still recommended. This is a great time to explore outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and visiting the beach. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared for any potential storms. Overall, September offers a mix of both rainy and sunny days, providing a unique experience for visitors to Mexico.

On the west coast, average temperatures reach 27°C (81°F) while on the east coast they reach 28°C (82°F). You’ll also find rain during this time, as it’s the tail end of the rainy season – there’s an average of 358mm on the west coast and 270mm on the east coast.

Are there any events in Mexico in September?

On September 15 at 11 p.m., crowds assemble in town squares all over Mexico to partake in the Grito de la Independencia (Cry of Independence) festivities. This momentous occasion commemorates Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s historic call for independence in September 1810, when he urged the Mexican people to rise against the Spanish colonial forces. As the clock strikes 11 p.m., the mayor echoes a replica of Hidalgo’s cry, and the jubilant crowd responds with enthusiastic shouts of “¡Viva México!” The night sky lights up with fireworks, and an atmosphere of sheer merriment engulfs the surroundings. The following day, September 16, is dedicated to civic ceremonies and spirited parades, honoring the country’s independence and fostering a deep sense of national pride.

The gastronomic riches of Oaxaca take the spotlight in this delightful food festival, Oaxaca Flavors, held over three days at the end of September. The vibrant event unfolds at both the Oaxaca Convention Center and various restaurants throughout the city. With a total of 70 skilled Oaxacan chefs and 20 talented local artists participating, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
