Thailand is a country of extraordinary variety: a world-class capital city, dozens of islands ranging from well-developed resort destinations to near-empty coastline, a culturally rich north built around Chiang Mai, and a cuisine that is among the most distinctive and celebrated anywhere in the world.

Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.

Celebrating 10 Years of Luxury LGBTQ+ Travel

Why is Thailand a popular luxury travel destination?

? Don't forget that all of our itineraries are totally customized and so this is just an idea of what we can build for you.

Thailand is also one of the most welcoming destinations in Southeast Asia for LGBTQ+ travelers. Bangkok has a long-established and visible gay scene centred on Silom and Patpong, with a concentration of bars, clubs and venues that makes it one of Asia’s most openly gay-friendly cities.

Phuket’s Patong Beach has a well-developed gay scene with dedicated beach areas, bars and events. The broader Thai culture is known for its warmth and tolerance, and LGBTQ+ couples traveling through Thailand generally find it a relaxed and comfortable destination.

Thailand’s luxury hotel offering is among the strongest in Southeast Asia and exceptional value compared to equivalent properties elsewhere. Bangkok has an outstanding collection of five-star city hotels anchored by the landmark Mandarin Oriental on the Chao Phraya. The islands vary considerably: Phuket has the widest resort choice, Koh Samui offers strong boutique options including Six Senses and Banyan Tree, and Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga Bay delivers genuine seclusion.

In the north, the Four Seasons Tented Camp in the Golden Triangle is one of the most distinctive hotel experiences in the country. Across all of it, the standard of spa, food and service tends to exceed what the same budget delivers elsewhere.

Thailand also combines naturally with its neighbours. A two or three week itinerary can move from Bangkok and the islands into Vietnam, Cambodia or the Maldives without significant backtracking, making it one of the most flexible starting points for a longer Southeast Asia trip.

Travel Information for Thailand

General Information

Thailand occupies the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, with coastlines on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The country divides naturally into four distinct areas: the capital Bangkok, the mountainous north centred on Chiang Mai, the Gulf islands including Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, and the Andaman coast with Phuket, Krabi and the Trang archipelago.

Bangkok is one of the great cities of Asia. The temples of the old royal district, the Chao Phraya river, the weekend markets and the rooftop bar scene sit alongside a Michelin-starred restaurant scene and some of the best street food anywhere in the world. Ayutthaya, the ancient capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is less than two hours north by train and makes a natural day trip.

Chiang Mai operates at an entirely different pace. The old walled city contains hundreds of temples, the night bazaar draws visitors every evening, and the surrounding hills offer elephant sanctuaries, trekking routes and access to the Golden Triangle region where Thailand meets Laos and Myanmar.

Thailand uses the Thai baht, operates on ICT (UTC+7), and while Thai is the official language, English is widely spoken in Bangkok, resort areas and luxury properties. The country is broadly Buddhist and temple etiquette, covered shoulders and removed shoes, applies throughout.

Thailand LGBTQ+ Rights

Thailand is one of the most welcoming destinations in Southeast Asia for LGBTQ+ travelers, with a culture of tolerance and openness that is deeply embedded rather than simply legislated. Homosexuality has never been criminalised in Thailand, and public attitudes, particularly in Bangkok and the resort areas, are generally relaxed and accepting.

Bangkok’s gay scene is one of the most established in Asia, centred on the Silom and Patpong areas with a dense concentration of bars, clubs and venues. Phuket’s Patong Beach has a well-developed gay scene with dedicated beach areas and events. Pattaya and Chiang Mai both have visible LGBTQ+ communities and welcoming venues.

It is worth noting that legal protections for same-sex couples remain limited compared to more progressive destinations. Same-sex marriage has been a subject of ongoing legal debate, and while social acceptance is broadly strong in urban and tourist areas, more conservative attitudes can be found in rural communities. Thailand’s openness is largely cultural rather than statutory, which means the experience varies depending on where you are and how you travel.

For LGBTQ+ travelers staying within the luxury travel circuit, Bangkok, the main islands and Chiang Mai, Thailand is consistently comfortable, welcoming and easy to navigate as a same-sex couple.

How We Book the Trip

Thailand contains enough worthwhile experiences to fill several trips, and the challenge is building an itinerary that captures the country’s variety without feeling rushed. The right balance between Bangkok, the islands and the north looks different for every traveler, and the choice of island matters enormously. Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Yao Noi and the Andaman coast each offer something distinct, and the wrong choice for your travel style can define the whole trip.

Out Of Office knows Thailand well. We match island and resort choices to how you actually want to spend your time, whether that’s an active Andaman coast itinerary, a design-led retreat on Koh Yao Noi, or a wellness-focused stay in Khao Lak.

We build Bangkok stays around your interests rather than a standard highlights checklist, incorporate Chiang Mai for those who want the cultural north, and connect everything with transfers and internal flights that don’t waste travel days.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, we know which properties and destinations offer the most welcoming environments and build itineraries accordingly.

Bangkok

Bangkok is one of the great city experiences in the world and the natural starting point for any Thailand itinerary. The old royal district along the Chao Phraya contains the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, three of the most impressive temple complexes in Southeast Asia. Away from the historic centre, the city moves fast: rooftop bars above the Sukhumvit skyline, a Michelin-starred restaurant scene that ranges from street food stalls to formal dining rooms, and markets that run from dawn to well past midnight.

The Islands

Thailand’s islands divide into two distinct coastlines and choosing between them shapes the whole trip. The Gulf of Thailand, home to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, offers calmer seas, reliable sunshine from December to April and a strong hotel scene anchored by properties like Six Senses and Banyan Tree. The Andaman coast, covering Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and the Trang archipelago, delivers more dramatic scenery, limestone karst rising from turquoise water, and some of the best snorkeling and diving in Southeast Asia. Phuket has the widest range of luxury resorts and the most developed gay scene.

Chiang Mai and the North

Chiang Mai is a different Thailand entirely. The old walled city sits in a valley surrounded by forested hills, and the pace here is slow, deliberate and cultural in a way that contrasts sharply with Bangkok. The night bazaar draws visitors every evening, the surrounding temples reward a few days of unhurried exploration, and the hill tribe regions of the Golden Triangle are accessible from here.

Luxury Travel in Thailand

Thailand’s luxury experiences go well beyond the resorts. Private longtail boat charters through the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay. Exclusive access to temple complexes before the crowds arrive. Michelin-starred tasting menus in Bangkok restaurants that sit comfortably alongside the best in the world. Bespoke cooking schools built around your specific interests rather than group classes. Wellness retreats combining traditional Thai massage, meditation and spa treatments at resorts purpose-built for the experience.

Thailand is also one of Asia’s most popular destinations for luxury honeymoons. The combination of exceptional beaches, romantic private villa properties and outstanding food and service creates the conditions for a honeymoon that is difficult to match at any price point elsewhere.

Out Of Office selects properties and experiences based on what suits your trip, matches the pace and character of each region, and ensures everything connects into an itinerary that flows naturally from start to finish.

Getting to Thailand

Thailand is well connected from both the US and UK, with more routing options than many travelers realize. From the US, Japan Airlines, Eva Air, and Cathay Pacific all serve Bangkok via Tokyo, Taipei, and Hong Kong from both coasts, with total journey times of around 17 to 20 hours depending on your departure city.

From the UK, Finnair via Helsinki and Eva Air via Taipei both offer reliable year-round services to Bangkok in around 11 to 12 hours total travel time, and are worth comparing before defaulting to the obvious choices.

Both airlines connect well to onward domestic flights to Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chiang Mai. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is the main international gateway, with Don Mueang handling most domestic and budget connections.

Your Out Of Office specialist will recommend the routing that works best for your departure city and itinerary, and coordinate any onward domestic connections as part of your overall trip.
