Music and Dance Festivals in Tahiti

The most famed festival in Tahiti, the annual Heiva i Tahiti festival is a grand celebration of Tahiti music, dance and culture. Rooted in the Tahitian term “Heiva,” a fusion of “hei” signifying assembly and “va” denoting community places, this festival is a celebration of life itself for all of Tahiti’s residents, and for the lucky guests that get to witness it.

This wonderful experience has been in existence since 1881, making it one of the oldest festivals in the world. Unveil the embodiment of Polynesian culture in all its glory, and witness cultural traditionas that are so greatly cherished by the participating individuals.

In the 19th century, Heiva was once a banned dance, as the initial English missionaries perceived these displays as an explicit form of indulgence, leading to their prohibition. Only in 1985, with French Polynesia’s attainment of political autonomy from France, did the resurgence of Heiva commence, leading to its revival.
