The Maldives sits at an interesting intersection for LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex relationships are illegal under Maldivian law, and that is a fact worth knowing before you book. But the reality on the ground, particularly within the resort islands, is a different story. The country's luxury resorts operate essentially as private retreats, and the vast majority are experienced, professional, and entirely comfortable welcoming same-sex couples. Our team has sent hundreds of LGBTQ+ travelers to the Maldives and knows which properties handle this well and which ones to avoid. It is one of the most diverse, openly welcoming cities in the world, and it shows in Soho’s bars and clubs, in the Pride celebrations in July, and in the general sense that almost anything goes and you could meet anyone in the social whirl. Beyond the gay scene, it is one of the great cultural capitals, with world-class museums, restaurants, and neighborhoods that reward proper exploration. Few cities offer as much, and fewer still do it with quite the same energy.
If London is the world’s gayest city in numerical terms (by some measures, at least!), Berlin is certainly the queerest. Back in the days of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933), Berlin was packed with smoke-filled cabarets. It was a place of sexual experimentation. A place where the lines between gender and sexuality were blurred. It remains a haven of queer culture to this day, and it’s a major draw for gay travelers. If you’re looking to party then Berlin is the place to be. As a premier gay travel destination, Berlin offers an unparalleled nightlife and cultural experience.
Thailand is the unofficial gay travel capital of Asia. Bangkok is home to a big gay scene that attracts gay travelers from all over the world. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles for a reason: it’s very friendly. You’ll also find buzzing gay scenes on the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. A big cultural highlight of Thailand is Ayutthaya, the former capital. Abandoned in 1767, it’s full of enigmatic temples and ruins. For those seeking all-inclusive gay vacations, Thailand offers an array of options that cater to every taste.
Sitges is a great choice for a sunny gay vacation in Europe. It’s a charming coastal town on the Costa Brava. Barcelona is just 40 minutes away by train. Sitges isn’t a cultural destination – you’ll find all that in Barcelona. It’s a party and relaxation destination. Sitges is mostly populated by upwardly mobile gay male travelers from Europe and North America.
At the tip of Cape Cod in eastern Massachusetts, you’ll find Provincetown. It has long been a haven for artists and, as night follows day, LGBTQ+ people. The drag clubs, shops, and galleries along Commercial Street are always bustling in peak season. Provincetown is one of the most inclusive towns in the USA. Mykonos has been a gay travel institution since the 1970s and shows no sign of slowing down. The beaches are legendary, the beach clubs are glamorous, and the bars around Little Venice keep going well into the night. It is also, by any measure, one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
Some of the most spectacular places on the planet sit in countries where the legal picture for LGBTQ+ travelers is complicated. We send clients to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Egypt, among others, and we do it carefully. The law in these countries is one thing; the reality on the ground, particularly within the luxury properties we work with, is often another entirely.
In the Maldives, resort islands function as self-contained private retreats, largely insulated from the laws that govern the rest of the country. Gay group vacations are a great way to travel if you are a solo traveler looking to meet like-minded people whilst exploring incredible destinations. Spend some time relaxing on Copacabana beach before heading out at night to some of the authentic bars and restaurants. Head to the majestic Iguazu Falls – on the border with Argentina – and experience the sheer force of the water tumbling over the edge. Don’t forget to visit the Amazon if you can.
September is one of the best months to visit Barcelona. The weather is divine and the city will be bustling with energy.
